Subject: Support for goofy themed armies?

A 'goofy' themed army is okay. I wanted to let everyone know, its perfectly Okay to have a goofy themed army.
Now, I don't think they are necessarily goofy, but if they bring around a few laughs or weird looks, we can categorize them into that group. A pink Space Marine army. If I saw one, I would be afraid to play against it - just in case I lost.
The Automarines were not my first Space Marine Force. Before that was the Bloodswords, based loosely on the Dark Angels. They were based olive drab and had blue trim, red eyes and gold effects. 8 Years earlier they started out Bright Green and a Bright Blue. I think I even used to use testors. For 8 years I built up the Bloodswords, from 2nd edition all the way into 3rd edition. In 2005 my ex wife smashed my 4000 point mostly Metal and Classic space Marine army into little bits with a hammer and threw them in the trash. I didn't even play that much, seriously, just painted and relaxed at home. I remember crying at the loss of such time and work, and 1000 dollars in models and my 2 20-hour-to-build paper Drop Pods. I still have the link if anyone is interested. The old link broke but I can get it to you.
Well, I am sitting there in my house, and bored as hell. A little stressed out at life and I am tinkering with a tiny Transformer that my ex-wife has bought me as a stocking stuffer for Christmas. It was the 'worlds smallest Optimus Prime' that you can see on ebay if your curious. I was thinking about how cool it would be to be a kid again. When we were kids, and I am 30, Transformers set the standard for childrens TV. There were others, He Man, Thundercats, but none of them compared to Transformers. And of the Transformers, there was this really Powerful, Honorable, leader to everyone should know. Optimus Prime. Just thinking about how my father (who had passed away while I was young) used to buy me Transformers and watch me change them, brought me alot of joy. I remember thinking about his name, Optimus Prime... and thinking it did sound a little Gothic, like a name from Warhammer Universe. So from there my imagination went into overdrive and that's where the Automarines and Deceptitau came from. Reprolabels.com has the stickers that I use, and they are cheap! I also started re-collecting Transformers at this time, and I have 150 or so.
I have learned a lot about painting since I picked these color schemes, and I still have a long way to go as I even get close to the professionalism that you all display. But Ive already been down the Normal Space Marine route, and I probably will never go back. I have normal Dwarves =P if they can be considered Normal at all. And I like having a 'For the Greater Evil' tau force. It totally justified battles between Deceptitau and any other "Good" force. Sometimes its fun to be aligned on the evil side.
If I had the room in my place, I would build an Imperial Guard unit to look like 'Cobra' from GIJOE. Use a battle sister as the baroness, paint some doods head gold (or silver if you like, Destro had it both ways) use putty to model Cobra Commanders hood over a Commisar, and then go to the Reprolabels website and order their Cobra sticker assortments. The leman russes can be painted like cobra Hisses, and even converted slightly to match. The stormtroopers can be painted in the Crimson Guard color scheme, while the normal troops can be the classic blue we all remember.
I also have seen a guy who made a Imperial Stormtrooper space Marine army with a black librarian with a glowing sword, with his vehicles painted in that battleship grey used in star wars. It was a phenominal army to behold.
He also made an Undead chaos space marine army with skeletons modeled as cultists. Shout out to you Yann F.!
Then there is the one we should all know, the Drunken Dwarf army that used to be featured in a Army book, I think. That was a perfectly cool themed army.
Someone posted about a Barney themed Nid army. Now that would make me laugh!
What I am trying to say is, don't be afraid of what people think, if you have an idea to theme your Imperial Guard evil so you can play on the Xenos side of the table, or you want to model a complete space marine army with Dwarfs and call them squats, DO IT! If someone doesn't want to give you the time of day because your army isn't a normal, warfighting-perfectly painted army, then you probably shouldn't be playing with them in the first place. Don't be mad at them, just find someone else to game with. Make the game fun for you.
And just a shout out to people living on MCAS Iwakuni in Japan, that want to wargame, email me at IwakunigamersATgmailDOTcom.

very interesting, but maybe would be better if placed in the articles section instead of the forums, since forums are primarily for asking questions or showing off your work.
Like I said, very interesting piece. I would love to see some pictures of the armies!

These are discussion forums. 'Forums' is just a shortened form of the 'Discussion forums' moniker, much like 'Boards' for 'Message boards'. Forums (DakkaDakka's included) are not solely used "for asking questions or showing off your work". These are forums to discuss things with one another, part of which entails "asking questions or showing off your work". Perhaps the Dakka Discussions forum would have been a better place to start this thread, but that's what we have Forum Moderators (MODs for short) for.
How about we let them moderate from now on, eh big guy?

Heh...I like what you've started here tbh. My cousin and I always had fun thinking of goofy things about 40k. Sadly he's gone now but there are such good memories and the continual involvement in 40k, which we started together, really makes his presence felt. Thinking along the line of 'goffily themed' armies, he painted up a squad of SM to one of our wild ideas. Using a bright green and yellow for colors, some unhelmeted heads from SW we made an Irish themed army. All of them had blazing red hair and the Sgt. had a powere cudgel. We never got round to naming them but it was fun to see a squad done up that way.
We'd also had the idea to paint a Rhino bright Orange with the Confederate flag over the main hatch and '01' on both the side doors. This one never saw the light of day, but I'd LOL if I ever saw one done.
I started a SoB army about 6 years ago, though I haven't painted the first one yet, and I had a 'theme' in mind just for them. They'll be called, 'Sisters of the Grail Shaped Beacon' so anyone w/ any Monty Python experience will know the reference. I plan on doing an Inquisitor w/ 2 Acolytes modeled up to resemble the 'Spanish Inquisition' sketches. I really don't know how far I'll eventually take them..so a comfy chair may need to be modeled at some time.

Hey Giddy: You know, fiendcrakar just made a suggestion. He didn't get a bad attitude, or try and stomp Automarines. He was not attempting to moderate, since he gave no orders or anything of the like. Maybe you should tone it down a bit, unless you are just out to piss people off, in which case you should turn it up quite a bit.

Oh, and on topic, I think that automarines has made some good points. A lot of the younger people getting involved in this hobby can get their ideas stomped on if they get in with a poor gaming crowd. It's important to be able to decide for our selves what we are going to build, and how it's going to be themed. Since we are the ones who have to use our own resources to make the army in the first place.
Personally, I am glad the Transformers are in my childhood and not in my current age. However, while I would not have chosen the same themes as automarines, that in of itself is the point. We both should try to stay true to our own inspirations, while at the same time giving at least an ear and some attention to the "wisdom" of those who have been at it longer and/or harder. I think having two opposing forces like that is an outstanding idea.

I'd rather he didn't tone it up to make people mad. That just make my life tougher.

I wouldn't have a problem with a quirky themed army, but a lot would depend on how much effort had been put into it. The cobra army idea, as an example, could look amazing - if it was done right. Obviously how far you take your theme is up to personal preference, but I'd like to see the cobra troopers with silver facemasks (the stormtroopers are already close to looking like crimson guard) and the hiss tanks would need some converting etc. Just sticking a cobra icon on a leman russ wouldn't cut it for me.
IMHO there's a big difference between "inspired by" and "goofy". The cobra army example could be either, and personally I'd prefer to see the gritty "inspired by" hard-as-nails version, rather than the garishly-coloured OTT "goofy" version. Just because the characters in the animated TV shows had ridiculous voices doesn't mean your army has to be silly too (even as a kid I mentally edited the voices to sound better - don't get me started on how much of star wars ep3 I mentally edit!!!). My favourite Action Force (aka GI Joe) comics were the earlier grittier ones (eg: the Black Major being betrayed and left to die on an iceberg, and writing a curse in his own blood, etc!). Transformers is a bit more difficult to make grimdark, but Hello Kitty certainly veers waaay over towards goofy.
I'm rambling a bit, but I guess what I'm getting at is whether your army is goofy is not entirely dependent on the theme you pick. Just because it's inspired by a toy doesn't mean it can't be hard-as-nails and look cool (and grimdark). If goofy is what you're aiming for then that's ok too, but it's a different style (brighter colours - 3rd ed UMs I'm looking at you! - and wacky conversions).
Someday I want to do a Robots of Krikkit themed necron army, with white necrons and a lord with a red resurrection orb (and you can just imagine the inquisitor and retinue that will fight them!).

My first space marine chapter was the Pansies.
(mind, I was twelve, and I already had a tyranid force without a goofy theme).
Their armor was tentacle pink. Their insignia was a smiley face, their unit markings were different colored flowers. For the chapter master, I took a dark angel with a robe and made it a purple poka-dotted dress. He also had his face flattened so that it could be adorned with the smiley face.
Yep.
