1. Buy some Dettol - Liquid Antiseptic Disinfencant. I got mine form Wilkinsons for £2

2. Place some plastic figures in a bath of Dettol for a few hours or days

3. Brush off the loose paint using water and an old toothbrush.

Conclusion

After 8-12 hours The one armed 'beaky' Space Marine is totally clear of paint and ready to disassemble and re-use. The Dark Elf has a black sticky residue upon it, I believe this is spray paint which may take longer than citadel 'pot' paint to dissolve. The based Space Marine has lots of sticky half melted paint upon it.

All three figures have gone back in the Dettol Bath.

presuming the recipe for Dettol is the same the world over, I really must try this - I have a lot of old figures with bad paint jobs.

Another variable is the type of paint and varnish used

The bit stuck on the side of England. Wales isn't it.

I used to use cheap brake fluid from motorworld. It was quite good but not as good as some of the stuff they can get in the states i.e. simple green

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed at him, we leagued with him, old chum.
No soldier's paid to kick against His powers.
We laughed - knowing that better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives; not men, for flags.

I currently have an Eldar Warlock and the Space Marine Captain from GD '91 soaking in Dettol. Will let you know how it goes tomorrow.

I've had them in the Dettol bath for another 24 hours now. Both the Dark Elf and one armed Space Marine are totally stripped of paint and show no sign of damage to the plastic. The other Space Marine is almost stripped of paint and I am sure that if dissasembled could be stripped completely.

Unlike other paint strippers I have used Dettol does not remove or weaken Superglue.

Dettol has done a PERFECT strip on an eldar warlock and the very fiddly '91 Games Day captain. Not very messy either. Most of the paint literally fell off as I removed the models from their mini-baths. I used a killa kan plastic tray, just 2 of the sections of it, not much dettol needed to submerge.

i can tell ya from trying it myelf, regular pinesol kicks the asses of old paint jobs in no time. when i first tried it i left a squad in a cup of the stuff for probably 2 hours and it came out like your first attempt. dunno what it is in the pinesol but it rocks in paint removing.
and yea that sticky stuff is melted paint.
