The point of many discussions I have had with guys I play 40k with.

How will you judge opponent who uses SM Special Characters when they are painted in their original chapter scheme or in player's army colors?

Opinions I have heard....

1. No problem if army is in paint scheme of character. Example.... Sicarius in Crimson Fists army and Sicarius is painted as a Crimson Fist.

2. Only want to see character in army with his original colors. Example.... Kantor painted as Crimson Fist in Crimson Fists army.

3. Complete mess. Example.... Lysander painted as Ravenguard in Ultramarine army

4. Don't care one way or other.

Now for what I have heard them say for judging during tourney.

Some are dead set against seeing character in any color other than their original chapter and will ding them for sportsmanship. Some are dead set against seeing character not in army color of rest of army and will ding.

I have buddy who is hell bent on getting every special Ultramarine character and painting them red. He is doing to piss me off and to show his distain of UM's. I asked why he is doing and he said he has vendetta against Smurfs. I said he has vendetta against his wallet via he could just scratch build all these guys instead of paying $17 each to defile in an awful red paint job.

I'm getting every character and I will paint each in their original schemes and just play in my Ultramarine army. I see that as being best way to do. Personally, I find it unfluffy and terrible to paint in color other than original scheme. I have no problem if they want to make similar character fig with different name and use rules, but to see Sicarius in red armor.

What do you all think? How will you judge? How are you doing characters? Let's hear some feedback.

Don't care. If GW is going to say "This is how we want the SM Codex to work" and
at the same time say "Armies should be personal expressions of creativity" then people
should be free to take whatever model and paint it in whatever color scheme that
they choose. In the end, the most important thing, game wise, is that someone can
tell what the model does, and so using a correctly equipped model is more important
than what color it is.

People should get used to seeing special characters in different colors. You'd think
Eldrad was a Harlequin he wears so many different colors these days.

If ANY SM army can use the character models (as a 'couts as' character xx), then the models should be fine in any chapter colours. Doesn't matter if it's marny-boy in BA red, or Sicarius in IF yellow.

If you don't want to use them, fine (personally, I WON'T use eldrad in my eldar army - either the model OR the rules for him, as a) he doesn't fit my theme, and b ) the figure is tooo overdone. I prefer the old farseer - the pointing finger of dooooom!) but you really have no say in how someone else paints up his models, or what models they use for his characters.

My black drop with wings red power armoured marines (BAs) will eventually be using SM special characters painted the same way as the rest of the army when I use the SM codex.

Yeah it does pretty much say in the rules that its allowed (the whole "use in any army part" at the start of the codex)

My view would be anyone who dings anyone for bad sportsmanship for using a special character painted a different way- is actually the one who is being a TERRIBLE sport

In the immortal words of Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer....

I can't say it matters. Don't really matter. It doesn't really matter. Don't matter. Can't say it really matters.

It even says in the Codex that you should feel free to paint them however you want. It is just a name tacked onto a rules list, with an eye pleasing model added in for good measure. If you get marked down on this, perhaps this isn't a tournament you really want to be part of?

Fair enough!

I just want to know where all the fluffy players have have gone. I really don't mind the use of rules, but saying my red model is really Sicarius is asinine. Take the time to come up with name. Should not be problem as you took time to paint fig red. All I'm saying.

It's like back in the day many Chaos players would not mix up factions as they were strict on the fluff. I see those days are gone.

Just like the days of seeing a painted army, I guess.

My, oh, my how far this hobby has fallen <sarcasm>.....

I would never use a non-Ultramarines character in my Ultramarines army, but I would have no problem with someone painting their models whatever color they like in their own army. Heck, I have DA and SW terminators, and various BT bitz in my UM army. I just like the way they look.

hardcore fluffnut here. I gave up on GW after they changed the fluff so many times. Now, I can't even keep up with what is current, vs what is original..

I have no problem, in theory, with people using the Sicarius model as either Sicarius or a general Chapter Master for their, say, Howling Griffons army. Maybe they just really like the model.

I have no problem with people making their own Howling Griffons chapter master and using the rules for Sicarius.

I WOULD have a problem with someone using the Sicarius model, painted blue like an ultramarine, as either Sicarius or a Chapter Master in their yellow and red Howling Griffons army. At least make SOME effort towards a cohesive army!
