The other day, I finally decided to buy this from the FLGS. It was originally $240, but with the store's 20% discount on GW products, it was down to about $200.

As far as I know, GW no longer sells this particular Eldar boxed set. The current "Eldar Army" has some guardians, dire avengers, and similar vehicles, with the exception of some jetbikes, but no included codex, banshees, autarch, or dragons. Lucky me, eh?

After flipping through the codex I found that I really like the fast paced style of the Eldar, as well as their exotic weaponry; Eldar will definitely be my main army. Those banshees are crazy. I test-rolled them against a tac squad of marines and they wiped it out every time. Awesome.

Now for the "Modelling & Painting" bit. I've assembled some guardians and a Wraithlord, but the arms on the eldar kill me. It's tricky business trying to get them into position. From what I've learned from the Guardian sprue, the arms aren't paired, either, so getting a particular pose proves a bit difficult. They're still more posable than space marines, though, which makes up for the effort.

Here's the Wraithlord.

I tried to make it seem as though he is about to grasp the sword with his other hand, conveying a sense of battle readiness. Your thoughts/opinions?

For the color scheme, I was thinking about using a bright vibrant green with white as a secondary. Think Biel-Tan in reverse, but with brighter green. I'll post more models as I finish them.

On another note, does a Farseer count as a psyker for the purpose of Wraithsight tests?

Thats a good find. However i would have not of gotten it as the units dont suit my eldar style [except maybe the wraithlord, banshees and guardians]. The autarch is a little disappionting in my eyes as it has nothing special, eg pose or wargear combo/style, to make going out of your way to buy this when it came out. Well done though.

Can we have updates of the construction/painting for your army as it happens? [pics too please]

Sheffield. U.K.

The Guardian and Dire Avenger arms are paired up.
I had the same problem until I noticed that the sashes/soul gems on the upper part of the arms have a corresponding match with their accompanying limb.

Although the sword looks cool it is garbage in play,

The most common wraithlord configurations are:

EML & BL
Scatterlaser & Starcannon
Scatterlaser & shur. Cannon

and no matter what weapon choice you pick always take 2 X flamers.

Ah paint some flames on the sword and call it a flamer.

I feel your pain on the difficulty w/ the arms. The arms always drove me crazy on my DE models as well. The only thing I finally did to make it more managable was to glue one arm only on the model before painting, usually the free arm supporting the weapon. The gun arm I'd paint up on it's own and attach once the model was painted.

I never noticed that this Wraithlord model in particular has toes.

Yeah, that's a good mix of models to start playing Eldar with. Either leave the Vyper out of the list or get a few more to make a squadron.

Is the Autarch multi-piece or a single sculpt? If he's got removeable arms, slap magnets in the sockets and pick up more arm bits from the Dire Avengers Exarch.

If you get one of the other Autarch models (I suggest the chainsword/fusion gun/warp generator model) you can mix and match the various weapon and gear options easily. I'm just finishing this with my own Autarch. Magnets can be found at www.kjmagnetics.com.

Oh yeah, one last thing:if you don't want your Shuriken Cannons (most Eldar players prefer Scat Lasers, Brightlances or EML's) I'll be happy to buy them off you as I need them for conversions. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money

So, let me get this straight.
You bought it because it was cheap, then after thumbing through the codex, discovered it was an army whose stye of battle appealed to you?
Does your store not have "store copies" of the codex for you to look at, so you can decide what you might like before making the plunge?
What if you had bought it, read the codex and gone, meh! infantry in paper armour, with short range guns and thought they sucked.

Overall, it's not a bad deal for what you get.
Out here they sold for $300 - without the codex (infantry are $50 a box, and those individually goes for about $450) and very few FLGSs got army boxes. Other reason I wouldn't have bought it was that I already had at least triple that contents (but I've been collecting/playing for over 20 years).

The Wraithlord doesn't so much have toes as tabi.
Big toe and rest of toes are smaller lump.

That is the "limited edition" autarch. Yes, his arms are separate, and so is his head (I believe, based purely off the other ones).

I'm OVER 50 (and so far over everyone's BS, too).
Old enough to know better, young enough to not give a ****.

That is not dead which can eternal lie ...

... and yet, with strange aeons, even death may die.

I already liked the eldar from bat reps and what I already knew; I just like them so much more now.

The "paper armor" and weapons are some of the best parts of the eldar IMO. Every infantry weapon (besides Reapers) is an assault wepon, so they'll always be on the move, and light armor makes them seem a lot more flexible (a big difference from the space marines that I'm used to; our gaming group uses nothing but 3+/2+ saves). Plus, moving a tank 36" in one turn just seems so damn appealing. Need a fire prism on the other side of the table? Zoom! (I imagine the driver hitting the turbo button and hanging on for dear life, even though eldar have inertial dampeners)

Since I'm about to start assembling the Avengers, what would you recommend for exarch wargear? I was thinking of giving him two catapults for more ranged punch, but a shimmershield and sword could help out if they get caught in assault. Your thoughts?

If you get caught in assault then there is little a single power sword will do i have found, YMMV. Personally i would go the dual catapults, giving him 5 shots, this is great for hordes especially.

Dual catapults, 10 man squad, bladestorm, and guide: thirty-two shots that can re-roll to hit. Awesome.

I was going to make up my own craftworld. Codices always stay vague enough to allow you to make up your own background (a thousand chapters of marines, guard regiments, ork clans, etc). They're going to be bright green with light gray as a secondary. I'm not sure on a name yet, but I like the sound of Craftworld Kaeryon.
