What happens if I surround a unit with large skimmer tanks like waveserpents or falcons, completely boxed in, and then fly a 5th vehicle on top of them? they cannot move out of the way without moving through, or within 1" of enemy models? I imagine that since they are surrounded totally, and they fail the tank shock, they are destroyed as illustrated in the rule book, but what if they pass the check?

one if they pass you move your full distance (what ever you declared) and as long as you dont end up on top of them they dont move at all, the only time models move when tank shocked is if they are forced to move (you end your movement on top of the models) if they are forced to move they move wherever the player wants (if they cant keep cohesion then they just make it up when they move) look up models out of coherency it will tell you that models have to get back into coherency as soon as they can, there is nothing that says you cant be out of of coherency or you die. (exceptions you have to remove models and maintain coherency, but if you are forced out of coherency then you just get back into when you can) so in this case say they are surrounded on 3 sides you tank shock and end up on top of the unit they would just move out behind the tank that tank shocked them (basically you would swap places and the tank would now be in the middle of the 3 vehicles.

A related skimmer question: I know in 4th skimmers did not block LOS (unless crashed/wrecked). Does this hold true for 5th ed. as well?

So you can shoot under them and be shot at but not assaulted?
Maybe I should put my monolith on a skimmer base

what base does the monolith come with? thats the base it goes on. Ive never seen anyone be able to draw LOS under a skimmer. Do you realise how far away the model would have to be to draw LOS under a skimmer? Unless the targets are adjacent to the skimmer then its almost impossible (and yes you can shoot off their weak little eldar cankles)

There does seem to be a group of people assuming that they can shoot from their ankles instead of still needing to draw a valid line of sight around (or under or over the top of) the flying brick they're hiding behind.

you have to be able to see limbs/torso/head if all you can see is feet/hands/antennas/gun barrels then you do not have LOS

The rules disagree with you.

No idea what a Monolith comes with, but GW's "standard" flying bases have 4 different "height" options, including one taller than most standard infantry models.

Which is what He said , the rules do agree with Da Gob Smaka. You do know that the term "limbs" means arms & legs??

Hi. Let me redirect this thread back to the original question...
da gob smaka wrote:so in this case say they are surrounded on 3 sides you tank shock and end up on top of the unit they would just move out behind the tank that tank shocked them (basically you would swap places and the tank would now be in the middle of the 3 vehicles.
I am talking about being surrounded on FOUR sides. then flying a skimmer tank to land in the middle, where the unit in question is. Where can they move? again, if they fail, tehy are subject to the "I have nowhere to go when broken, so I am destroyed" rule, but in the case of a unit that passes it's tank shock, where can it go? it's surrounded totally, and the 5th tank needs to be put somewhere.

If I may, Also another question? Squad on back table edge, 2-3 Skimmers, first one or 2 box the unit in. The last model then tank shocks.
If the squad is boxed in has no place to go but off the table edge. Is the unit gone?

Not sure, but I don't think the rules allow what you're describing to happen. Tank shock requires the moving vehicle to declare its movement destination and then move there in a straight line without changing direction. This may imply that you can't go over your own vehicle and then through your opponents squad - it's just a straight line movement, and you'd stop at your own vehicle and not tank shock.

If you have the unit boxed in on four sides and you drop a skimmer on top of them, they can essentially be placed anywhere which fulfills the criteria on page 68. That means that the boxed in unit gets to essentially hop over the obstacles (your tanks) which are boxing them in.

What if it's putting the last side on a box in a pincer move? The last of which was shocking. Which then, only leaves only going off the table?

Per the rulebook FAQ, models can't be moved off the table unless the rules specifically allow them (such as if they fall back). So if you Tank Shock a unit and they pass their morale check they'd simply hop "over" your vehicle the minimum distance needed to remain on the table.
