I am going to start a tau army and i was wondering what miniatures to get. I am definitely going to get a unit of fire warriors and a crisis suit. i then was going to get a unit of pathfinders and another crisis suit but i was also thinking of taking out the extra xv8 and pathfinders and substitute a devilfish for them. i dont know what would be better because im a noob. i also have limited money so its not possible to get all of it. i would appreciate help with this! alot!

to understand how many orks it takes to screw in a lightbulb you must calculate the surface area of a standeard sized urinal, multiply that by 3 bajillion, calculate that in svedish half-pennies and convert that amount to japanese yen. or you could ask a Tau to screw in the bulb. |

Welcome to dakka.
The battleforce is a good place to start. Also gives you lots of minis to paint whilst you save up for what you want nexy.
Very little would go to waste.

Whew!! Take a breath there dude. Don't get the cart before the horse there sonny.
Start with the basics, rulebook and Tau codex. Then grab youself a battle force box, some paint, and glue and knock yourself out. Once you've mastered that, then start revving that model motor and look into new models.

Welcome to Dakka, I agree get the books first. Then shop around.
Hit EBAY there is bound to be someone who got Tau for Christmas and didn't want it. You can find some good deals with a little patience. Good luck, it's nice to have another member of the Greater Good .

Wait. You started a thread asking how to make a Tau army and eleven hours later you were so sure that they were the best army of all that you started not one, but two spam threads about it? How'd that come about?

Well i've been playing Tau for about 5 years now. The first thing to know is that there are 2 main ways to play Tau, Static Gun lines, and Mechanized Infantry.
Static Gun line is self explanatory, LOTS of firewarriors and Broadside suits the idea here is merely to overwhelm your opponent with your superior range and strength. This method is the easiest to play but suffers from the overwhelming weakness of any form of close combat army (since this style has no real means of effectively running away)
The other is Mech, this is my favorite method, as this tactic makes the best use of our speed while shooting, meaning for troops choices you take 3 or so firewarrior units mounted in devilfish. Take 3 hammerheads, and 9+ suits. This method is about keeping your enemy at arm's length (usually 18-24" away) to stay out of assault which is the greatest weakness of the tau. however the weakness of this style is that its possible that certain armies can outshoot you.
