I am going to start a tau army and i was wondering what miniatures to get. I am definitely going to get a unit of fire warriors and a crisis suit. i then was going to get a unit of pathfinders and another crisis suit but i was also thinking of taking out the extra xv8 and pathfinders and substitute a devilfish for them. i dont know what would be better because im a noob. i also have limited money so its not possible to get all of it. i would appreciate help with this! alot!

to understand how many orks it takes to screw in a lightbulb you must calculate the surface area of a standeard sized urinal, multiply that by 3 bajillion, calculate that in svedish half-pennies and convert that amount to japanese yen. or you could ask a Tau to screw in the bulb.

Just get firewarriors and a suit or too before rushing off on pathfinders or anything else to exotic. That said, you're going to want at least one devilfish, even if you play gunline-style tau.

Oh, and if you can, look on e-bay for cheaper model prices.

buy the codex & rulebook if you dont have them already. Get your HQ & two troops. play a few games. then decide what you need based on those games, rather than going mad with buying cool units. Itll help you save money & youll be a better player cos youre getting more experienced.

WAIT WAIT WAIT! You mean to tell me, you've been spamming "Tau are so awesome!" threads all day and you don't even have an army?

Well let me give you some advice, Crisis suits tons of them. That is all you need. After that some Troops in transports and some Kroot to infiltrate for far off objectives.

Once upon a time, I told myself it's better to be smart than lucky. Every day, the world proves me wrong a little more.

Somewhere in south-central England.

Everyone has to start somewhere.

You need the codex.

You need a Crisis suit HQ and two units of troops. One can be Kroot but one of them has to be Fire Warriors. The Battleforce is a good starting point.

Get a Hammerhead tank too.

After that, more suits.

Be aware, Tau are a difficult army to play.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

You need a lot of firewarriors.
No need for transports or upgrades. Don't even bother with upgrading to a sarge (or whatever the fish-heads call them).
Buy a lot of vespids. Vespids are tha shiznizzle.
Focus on their exemplary HtH abilities.

When i play tau they all seem to lack in HtH, so maybe a squad of kroot in a transport to give it an HtH edge.

Uh, and learn recognize sarcasm, which will save you a lot of money. Doing a lot of reading helps with recognizing: Read army lists, check what pops up often and try to understand why. You'll stumble upon popular tactics like JSJ and FOF, understand them and decide if you want to play like that.

Imho, you cannot go wrong with crisis-suits, especially, if you magnetize them to use all normal weapons and to change them to whatever the heavy support variant is called. They'll always fit in somewhere, be it HQ, Elite or Heavy Support...

Edit: Uh, and learn how to prevent sarcastic answers. There might be some hints in the other posts.

Well the follow are essential, as in 1+...

1 Crisis Suit Commander and 6 Firewarriors. You can either have 6 more FW or some kroot. That's your core force, so start there!

Ppl's republic/New Zealand!

You should get at least 3 "Hammerhead chassis", but I recommand you buy the Skyray boxes, because in that set you can build a skyray head and rail/ion heads. I tend to field two railheads and will possibly field another ion head or skyray.

Also be very careful before gluing your crisis suits (unless you gonna mag them, tho i never done dat). I tend to prefer specialised suits instead of the old "Missile Pod + plasma" mix.

I think in the long run you should field at least 4 squads of 12 fire warriors.

Oh and if your planning to field kroots, I suggest alot of them. Personally I want to field at least 20 of them.
