The second one looks much better than the first one. I'd suggest that you just a little bit lighter on the drybrushing. It looks pretty heavily applied and you have some overpainting going on. The second one looks neater and the transitions are more gradual. You can use the black wash on the mouth and nails to add some definition between the white and green parts.

As you're a beginner, you only need to work on two things.

1. Thin your paint a little. It'll go on more evenly and you can spread it around more. Plus it won't f*** your brushes. It'll set you up for future techniques like blending and highlighting.
2. Neatness. At first, you'll be painting like Stevie Wonder. Don't worry about it. The main thing to get down is being neat. Everything else follows this. Take your time and never be afraid to try something new.

Aside from that, just study 'eavy metal miniatures. Look at what colours they've used, and how they've worked well (or badly) together. Study how they highlight things etc. But most of all, spend a few weeks at least on the two points above.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

very good, but one massive tip: it looks like you use a lot of snakebite leather or something similar. Buy a pot of fleshwash & use liberally on leather areas. this works wonders for shading & general leatheriness.

other than that, great job so far. welcome aboard!

Seconded on thinning the paint. You have some good basecoating and highlighting going on, heck, if you just give it a onceover with a thin black wash and hit the highlights again, your done.

Looking good!

some people dont like to do 4 thin coats to cover their RnF model. And i cant blame him since GW paint require so much work without proper foundation paints.

OP , you obviousely have alot of talent ( shaded tabard on your first mini already! ) the only advice i can give you is. Find a good type of foundation paint to your liking. I dunno about others but myself dont like spending 3x the time to achieve same effect better company paints can do.

For these two minis I have to agree, Le Grognard's tip seem about right.

Also true. Invest in the Citadel Foundation Paint set. You'll see your results ( which are already good ) improve a little and it makes life a little easier when it comes to basecoating some colours. I frequently use Calthan Brown as a basecoat for gold. The Snakebite Ork Mob in my gallery had their trousers basecoated with Iyanden Darksun foundation paint, and all it took to finish the job was a quick flesh wash and Iyanden highlights.

welcome aboard!
i think that you are pretty skilled at painting for a first try!
i remember when i started out with like 5 paints and just had fun
here are some tips to help out:
#1
thin out your paints, that way they don't get "blobbed" up and destroy your brushes, and the model looks way better.
#2
practically live on this and other warhammer and figuregames forums and try the things they talk about, it worked for me and i think it will work for you!
#3
mix paints!, it's like the biggest thing that even some of my older friends that have played and painted for 10/15 years do wrong.
they always wonder how i get the good colors between two other soo.... mix paints.

[edit] don't forget.... you can always learn more, and have fun!
