I have a question regarding the use of mixed forces... Space Marines & Imperial Gaurd and in my case Chaos Space Marines and Daemons.

My friend frequently utilizes choices from different codex's... I have however just began playing and have no experience in doing the same. Are there any special rules. Or is it a simple case following the force organization chart and adhering to the point costs.

Again my apologise as I have no experience in this but is it possible to say summon a Bloodthirster with all it's Daemon abilities in the same way as a CSM Greater Daemon would be summoned?

If there are any threads here or if someone could give a quick description of what is possible i'd be greatly appreciative...

Thanks in advance.

You have several points so to each. Note this is for 40K NOT Apocalypse related:

In 40K only witchhunters and demon hunters have allies in this context. Follow the specific rules in those codexes. On the chaos side LATD and maybe the witchhunters adversaries section has allies. I’d look to those sections specifically.

However, if you’re playing for fun and “house rules,” then I’d suggest:
1) something similar to the demonhunters codex allies rules
2) make up what you want.

Per the rules set out you cannot use a Bloodthirster with a Chaos marine force, only a generic Greater Demon. Now you may have house rules that are different which is just fine. If your mate is ok with doing that then agree beforehand and use the releveant point costs. You need to decide before hand if the you are going to summon it like a Greater Demon from the Chaos marine dex, or akin to the Demon Codex (I’d go with chaos marine dex, including champion requirements or whatever).

Finally: under Apocalypse everything’s pretty much out the window. I’ll let someone who plays that game help with that.

In Apocalypse games you can mix-and-match any unit from any codex together into a single army as you see fit.

In standard games of 40K you cannot except for the rare cases where a codex specifically allows you to do so, with the only two being the Daemonhunter and Witch Hunter codices (which allow you to ally with Space Marines and Imperial Guard and vice versa).

Edit: Curses! Beat to the punch by Fraz. . .although I think you meant to write 'Apocalypse' not 'Armageddon'.

Your friend is using his own rules for this, so you need to speak with him.

the only official rules for 'combining' codices, is with the Demonhunter and Witchhunter books. (They can ally iwth IG or SM, but I am pretty sure not both at the same time.)

So, according to the GW rules, you can't combine SM and IG, nor CSM and Daemons.
That said, if you and your friend think it would be fun... go for it.

edit: I have *got* to start answering faster...

Yakface said it more concisely. Clearly he has not seen Kid Kyoto's new imperial guard regiment thread, and is still coherent.

Erp. Thanks Yakface. I'll edit.

Somewhere in south-central England.

The point of separate codexes is that each army has strengths and weaknesses.

Mixing two armies allows Army B to cover the weaknesses of Army A. For example, if you combined the firepower of Tau (weak in assault) with the assault power of Orks.

The problem with this is how to balance the game well. That doesn't matter in friendly games.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Not only that, some of them might also have wargear or other special rules with the same name but different function. Mixing it up and using the better versions of everything will lead to some pretty powerful combinations. For example, CSM and Daemons... the lesser demons in Codex:CSM can assault after deepstriking in while the "real" demons can't. Now imagine using both books together and showing your opponent the demon pack DS rules only from CSM. Nasty.

Hmmm right, from memory I can't remember him ever fielding Space Marines and Imperial Guard... Unless you count units from the Imperial Armour... which has Land Raider variant's in it.

I'm not sure if this is legal or not?

Personally i'd rather stick to the rules and what each codex states; so if CSM and Daemons dont mix then thats fine with me.

Thanks everyone for the quick response...

Also in the case that Daemon hunters do ally with SM or ImpG they have all sorts of restrictions. Like you can only take Daemon hunters heavy support choices. Also if you play with space marine's as your troop choice you can't take any grey knight troops just the inquisitorial stormtroopers. Daemon hunters also have this alliance factor because they themselves do not have a real fast attack unit. Their fast attack unit is just a gk squad being able to deep strike. The only plus to this is that all gk models can deep strike when it is not allowed in the game type. so basically I just add hellhound's and sentinels from the impG codex even then their are still restrictions on how many you can take.
