Subject: Assaulting Units behind a Wall/Barricade?

Hi Folks,
Just looking for how people interpret assaulting units behind a wall or barricade in 5th ed?
The reason I ask is, in 4th ed it clearly stated assaulting a unit that is behind a barricade gave the defending unit the initiate bonus (unless you have the relevant grenades).
In 5th ed I have only been able to find a reference to assaulting through difficult terrain.
So, after assaulting a unit behind a wall/barricade, is combat resolved as normal or is the an advantage given to the defending unit?
Any tourne experience with this in particular would be appreciated as would like to get some consistancy for my group of gamers.... thanks in advance

If the barricades are counted as difficult terrain, then the defending unit gets the bonus, otherwise no.

Low walls and barricades are difficult terrain (see page 13). So you follow the rules for assaulting through cover on page 36.
|
In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"... |

I think it depends on what you classify the wall/barricade is classified. Think they count as difficult (will check this soon as I can) therefore they have to roll a d6 to charge through it and at lower iniative (I).
The bonus is different in 5th ed as well. Instead of the defender attacking at I 10 (4th if i remeber right), the defender reacts and the attacker attacks at I 1. However a simple frag grenade in 5th (which every assult unit and their grandma seems to carry) forces the combat to be fought at iniative order. The made the wording change so people could not "missinturpret" the rules and use a pf/pk/th at I 10.
Edit: Webbe beat me to it.

well if the unit is standing right up against the barricade they really can't be assaulted from directly infront due to being unable to make base to base contact and you would have to flank around the barricade anyway.
If on the other hand they were standing far enough back from the barricade that your models could get in base to base by passing straight over it you have to decide whether a unit clambering over a barricade should be forced to roll a difficult terrain test or not.
While in the end it would come down to you and your opponent's decision, the guidelines for classifying terrain set out in the core rules say that difficult terrain includes "... low walls, hedges, fences, razor wire, barricades..." which I imagine would cover whatever terrain feature you are asking about.

In that kind of situation, if it is low walls and things that models would be able to move through (if agreed upon w/ your opponent) I generally stop my models on the other side of the obstacle as long as I rolled far enough to actually get to the unit I wanted to assault. I found it funny that the INAT actually shows the same thing. My reasoning was that I didn't want to balace my models precariously on said obstacles just to be in actual base to base. I think the RB supports the idea with it's 'Wobbly Model Syndrome' and it just makes those types of situations go smoother.
By the way, I'm not trying to get an INAT discussion going with that statement.

In every game, store and tournament I've ever played in, you'd be laughed out of the room, using that logic.

thanks guys ... seems to be a general consensus that if using a baricade (eg. for cover whilst shooting) - then you roll a difficult terrain test to assualt and if you make it into combat you fight as per the RB (even though the models are not physically in base-to-base)

Hopefully someone can quote a page before I get home and try looking it up.... but I am pretty darn sure this is covered in the rules, and that it states you are allowed. Just like assaulting up a ruin when you don't fit on the floor.

Assuming that the barricade has been declared as difficult terrain, then your models have every right to be placed willy nilly anywhere on that barricade that their difficult terrain test says they can reach. That's where the "Wobbly Model Syndrome" box on page 13 of the big rule book comes in and expects the players to be reasonable about positioning the models since it's likely to be impossible to balance a figure on barricade.
