Good morning Dakka

I'm taking a bit of a break from painting my Ultramarines to concentrate on a new project, an army I've wanted to work on for a long time now...the Blood Pact, from Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghost's series of novels published by Black Library. I'll be using the Imperial Guard Codex to guide my unit choices (along with cool modeling opportunities). I know the new 'dex is coming out fairly soon, so I'll keep my early choices confined to those units that have a really good chance of not changing once it's released.

Anyway, here are a few pics from my new project:

Renegade Ogryn

Renegade Commander

Renegade Stalk Tank

There are also some more pictures on my blog:

That is just COOL!! I love the blood pact stuff and it was a great read. Grade A work on both the converstions and the painting. Your stalker tank is a very cool effective model. Please post more as they come up!!

Sweet Stalk tank, what rules do you use for that thing? Sentinel rules or HW team?

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

Nice work! The commander looks great, and the sentinel is a promising concept.
Good to see you're still kicking out the IG... but with the new codex coming up, I'm not surprised to see some nice models coming out of the DT workshop.

Nice to see more and more of these blood pact logs springing up now!

Your paint work so far is looking good, the ogryn and commander both look tops. The stalk tank, while a great conversion, is quite a bit smaller than I imagine Abnett is describing them to be. I think they are supposed to be about the same size as a salamander in length, with six legs and pilots in an "underslung glass bubble".

Still, nice stuff so far. Got much planned yet for how you plan to tackle the infantry in terms of their masks etc?

Cheers,

The IG rules do not have a really good stats to rep the stalk tank. It's either too light (like this nice sentinel conversion here) or too heavy (like my stalk tank that used Leman Russ rules to rep it). Since we can't get the excatly right rules for the thing, we just have to adapt to existing rules and compromise a bit.

Great looking Blood Pact models, by the way!

I have the results of the last chamber: You are a horrible person.
That's what it says: A horrible person...
We weren't even testing for that.

Interesting choice to use a vibrant yellow, but it works well with the paint scheme.

Kudos for the Stalk Tank conversion too, the underslung compartment look is great.

Outstanding, and oozing blood!
I love the paint scheme -- the effect on the commander is particularly striking.
And the conversion on the sentinel is also very effective.

*happy sigh. Another Dave Taylor army.

Hi guys, thanks for the comments.

@Ghost, this stalk tank will be used as a Sentinel.

@ CMDante and Col Hammer, there's also the super-heavy sized "flat crabs" from the assault on Vervunhive (not technically Blood Pact, but cool none the less). I think I'll be building a variety of sizes and, as the Col. says, compromising on the rules. If I can get a dozen or so of various sizes together perhaps I can come up with a "Stalk Tank Brood" datasheet for Apocalypse.

I just finished re-reading Sabbat Matyr and I'll now have to work out plans for the SteGs, AT70 Reavers, AT83 Brigands, and the N20 half-tracks - toting flamers of course!

And by the way, could someone let me know how to create a link in my posts? The intuitive way doesn't seem to be working for me, it's that complete lack of tech-savvy kicking in.

Cheers
Dave

This should be fun to follow- Over the years, we've seen so many different takes on the subject matter, yet with new rules etc. there are always new possibilities.

I really like the stalker tank, but he legs are too close to the cab to allow it to really rotate like your hanging joint suggests it is capable of.

Oh, and looking closer at your commander, I noticed that you mentioned he has a power sword... To me it looks like a simple close combat weapons because it lacks the refined nature of a power weapon's edge. At the very least, it'd be good to include the two wires you see on all the power weapons that indicate there's some electricity being supplied to the weapon's body. I know it's a bit of a crude thing to think they'd have to staple some wires outside to supply the current, but it gives the person you're fighting an indication of whether he's armed with a power weapon or a simple close combat weapon.

A P&M blog from Dave! Exalt! Makes me very happy to see you in the thick of the hobby here on Dakka, I'm sure a lot of us are going to follow this closely.

I love the modded sentinel. I've been grinding out some Deathskull Killa Kans, and might have to do something similar, it looks amazing. Keep it coming!

It remains to be seen if he's going to blog, or if he's just given us a link/previews for reference. The latter seems more likely... not that Dave's tutorials have ever been lacking! Since GW isn't going to be promoting his stuff now, all of the forums are probably getting this. Still, no complaints here.

Hi guys

Thanks for the comments so far. I've taken your thoughts on board (particularly Drake's) and here are two updated pics and a new one for three of my basic 'Pacters. I've also updated my blog with a pic on the command squad and some thoughts about the masks.

Sentinel: I added two spacers to increase the ability for the pod to turn.

The Commander's power sword, now with added power.

and the first three of the basic Pacters. Once they're painted it'll be easier to see what direction I'm going.

Dave can we get a side view of the Stalk tank so we can see what bit the sensor is made out of.

I'm rather proud of the fact that the term "Basic 'Pacters" has been adopted with such gusto.

Looking great Dave- I obviously love the new additions

The new troopers look great- I'm especially fond of the middle one and the one on the far right. The feral face looks cool as hell and definitely fits with the descriptions in the book. Same goes with the hooded head. Any chance you plan to add the grotesque masks based on Brian Nelson's goblin faces and the great beastmen muzzles on the plastic gor and ungors? I'm not sure if that's what the guy on the far right is wearing, or if he's an abhuman (both equally fitting options for a group of renegades). I'm sure that will become apparent when you paint them.

Please continue to keep us updated!

I don't rate the goblin or beastmen masks, they looks way to big and throw the whole look of the mini off. I think with your modelling skills Dave, you are more than capable of sculpting a few masks onto heads and then casting them or GS moudling them for your own use on the rest of your force.

Sculpting the masks is pretty easy too, if you did 5-7 heads you'd be sorted. It takes a little time because of the wait between stages though. Here's a few pics from my own Blood Pact log that show how I sculpted mine.

The empire flagellant heads would also fit well for variety should you decide to go with the 3rd option you listed in your blog.

Cheers,

Dante

@ CMDante

These look REALLY cool! You, sir, have successfully shamed me into working on sculpting some masks : )

While I agree that the Goblin and Gor heads are a bit too big, I think the Ungor heads fit right in there, I'll be using a few of those along the way too, just to speed things up.

@ Ghost, the sensor "block" is from the body of a heavy stubber, I used parts of the heavy stubber barrel for some of the new backpacks.

@ Vandez, why wouldn't we adopt "Basic Pacters"? It just sounds too cool ; )

Cheers

Yeah the way you are planning on using the ungor heads should work fine, the method I was meaning was where people cut the lower part of the face off of a gor and then stick it to a cadian face and try to join the edges. It just doesn't work.

You might want to consider using some ghoul heads too for the "ungor method" of masks, suitably screamy, evil looking faces.

Keep up the good work.

Not sure if you'll have seen my own pact log, here's a link incase you missed it:

Dave, I'm really digging the look of the Blood Pacter on the left (the one with the Cadian helmet)!

Would it be possible to get a shot of the backpacks, perhaps you can tell us how those were done too? I'm slowly building a Renegade army of my own and would like to try out your idea.

Thanks.
