I am pretty new to 7th ed fantasy, and was working on a conversion for my VC general on foot. Is it possible/advisable to model him on a larger base than normal? If so, what are the downsides/upsides to this? The base in question is one of the moster bases that is 2 norbal bases wide and deep, and would (I would imagine) displace 4 models in a joined unit.

No.

Leave base size as it is supposed to be.
It just causes dramas with opponents, certain weapons (magical) and abilities can screw the enemy or you.

40k is much more flexible with bases.

Thats what I had thought, since base size really matters. I dont have my rulebook handy, or I would have looked it up. I had just seen a number of special character models that were on larger bases and wondered if that was unique to them. I guess it is.

oh well. so much for my vampire hovering over a monster base with grasping hands reaching out of the ground.

The special characters usually have a good reason for it, a monstrous mount or Skarsnik being with Gobbla for example, but off hand I certainly can't recall any individual infantry special characters being on larger bases.

Archon has monstrous mount, which had large monster bases at least in 6th ed, not sure about the current ed.
