Well, I'm not an ork player, so this puts me into a dilemma. Theres a kid at our games place in our 400 points campaign who's fielding 3 cannons and an ork dreadnought + some boys and I don't even know what he's using as an HQ, a big mek i think. My question is how is 3 CANNONS and an ork dreadnought under 400 points, and if not please notify me so i can tell him. Because he doesn't seem to have a codex as far as i can tell, he never has it with him.... hmmmmm.
Thank you.

big meks are 35points without any upgrades.
ork boys are 6 points a piece. that goes for shoota boyz and slugga/choppa boyz.
a dreadnought for us is 75pts. but have to buy the guns.
1-3 artillary pieces fit one heavy support choice. and cannons cost 20pts a piece.
so i can see him fitting all of this under 400pts.

Kannon batteries are really really cheap, as is the Deff Dread.
A Battery of 3 Kannons is less than 100 points and not much more than 50.
I think with the most expensive Deff Dread you can build is 120 or so points.
You should consider getting Army Builder or the Codex.
Why so cheap? Deff Dreads are Armor 12.
Kannons are expensive models (hehe, conspiracy!)

Not bringing your Codex to the game is a bit off, IMHO. :(
At 400 pts, are you using Combat Patrol rules? These usually say you do not need a HQ, yes?
Big Mek 35 pts
3 Kannons 60 pts
DeffDredd (cheapest) = 85 pts
TOTAL: 180
Enough points for 25 boyz, a nob with PK and BP and 2 Big Shootas.

Deff Dreads are Armor 12, I2, and BS2! In other words they're pointed about right for their abilities. I personally never use them.
Kannons are a little nicer, with BS3, because they're crewed by grots, but you're paying 20 points for what's essentially a missle launcher, with a crew that goes bye-bye the moment that somebody sneezes too strongly. Space Marines get essentially the same weapon for FREE in a full tac squad, and it's attached to a T4, BS4, 3+ monster. If anything the cannons are a bit expensive.....

Perhaps you should ask the campaign coordinator to require Codecies especially for odd rules questions, I know at our gaming we require them. Also, an army list should be required too.. It goes right along with dice, range markers/tape measures, and other templates.

ok, thank you guys. quick question on cannons, does there need to be grots near them to fire? And could a snipers squad, say, kill said grots to dissable the cannon?

Rulebook page 55.
ANY crewman must be within 2" of a gun to fire it, and they need to maintain coherency.
Any shotting at an artillery squad has to randomize the hits between the guns and the crew so your snipers can't pick off the crew.

And so, due to rising costs of maintaining the Golden Throne, the Emperor's finest accountants spoke to the Demigurg. A deal was forged in blood and extensive paperwork for a sub-prime mortgage with a 5/1 ARM on the Imperial Palace. And lo, in the following years the housing market did tumble and the rate skyrocketed leaving the Emperor's coffers bare. A dark time has begun for the Imperium, the tithes can not keep up with the balloon payments and the Imperial Palace and its contents, including the Golden Throne, have fallen into foreclosure. With an impending auction on the horizon mankind holds its breath as it waits to see who will gain possession of the corpse-god and thus, the fate of humanity...... |

QFT
Turning up to a game without an army list is not only rude, but stinks of both laziness and cheating.
If you forgot/lost it, re-write it (you DO have your codex handy!)

Yes, there need to be grots need the cannons to fire them. They should come with two models standard, but it's possible to buy additional ones for 3 pts per model. While you are required to randomize hits between guns and crew, that means a 1/3 chance to hit to cannon, which means lots of hits on the grotz. Once they've been hit a couple of times they're probably run. Gotz have LD5! so they're run after just about anything. If there's a herder with them (10 pts), then it goes up to LD7 (yeah!). The herder comes with a squig hound, who can cause a re-roll of failed morale tests, by removing one of the models as a casualty.
So, a single round of shooting by ANYTHING should wipe out the unit.

If you are playing Combat patrol rules, the deff dred would be illegal, as F12 S12 R10 makes it over the maximum armour limit. (IIRC)

The opponent has to bring his Codex, too, so that you can check it if asked.
