If they can make it up the table, they will charge and kill things.
If you're their opponent, you'd say they're great for Cannonfire that's largely
wasted on blocks of skellies.

They are a hammer unit.
They cost alot, so will usually be in a smallish sized unit, so their capabilities drop quickly.
However a unit of 5 or 6 will smash most enemy units.
Great armour save.
Frenzy for extra attack. (frenzy is also their great weakness)
Good WS and St.
As vampires they allow nearby, non vampire units to march.... A unit of black knights on each side of them makes for one hell of a cav ccharge.
Add characters and regen banner to make them insane....

For example....
Blood Knights (5#, 360 Pts)
4 Blood Knights @ 360 Pts
Magic Banner; Musician Mus; Standard Bearer Std; Hand Weapon; Lance; Heavy Armour; Shield; Frenzy; Undead
1 Kastellan @ [75] Pts
Hand Weapon; Lance; Shield; Frenzy
1 Royal Standard of Strigos @ [35] Pts
5 Nightmare @ [0] Pts
Vampire (1#, 300 Pts)
1 Vampire (Battle Standard Bearer) @ 300 Pts
Hand Weapon; Battle Standard Bearer; Undead
1 Dread Knight @ [25] Pts
Barding
1 Nightmare @ [0] Pts
1 Walking Death @ [25] Pts
1 The Drakenhof Banner @ [125] Pts
Total Roster Cost: 660
6 models.
Blood knighs have 12 attacks from knights, 4 from castellan, 3 from vampire and 11 from horses, all with hatred for rerolls first turn. The blood knights are st 7 first turn (LANCES!) and the vamp is st 5 base.
Regeneration for whole unit.
Vs those pesky Empire Swordsmen...
14 hits from unit
2 from vamp
5 from horses.
Above includes hatred.
12 to 13 dead from unit and champ.
1 from vamp
1 from horses
So 14 to 15 dead, + 3 for combat res (standard and walking death AND BSB) - 'big 5' combat res... win by 12 to 13. Auto break thanks to fear. Now in enemy flank/rear.

Don't know what to tell you about them as I have never seen them get their charge off. They die alot easier then chaos knights and tend to take a whole lot of points with them when they go.

4 Blood Knights with the banner that gives them flaming attacks is a counter to a lot of nasties out there, especially when supported by a Danse for re-rolls. Keep them behind your lines untill turn three or four when the entire enemy army is stuck in the Ghoul and Zombie tarpits, then roll out and enjoy the show.

Run a unit of 5 or so with banner of 4+ ward save next to 10 black knights with banner of regen, sprinkle in vampires to suite and you have two hammer units running right next to each other.
Quite the charge.

I just run 4 with nothing and have their charge lanes partially blocked by bats. When I do want them to charge the bats either declare a legit charge somewhere else or fail a charge at the other end of the table just to get them out of the way. Then I dance the knights for re-rolls. It's a very small investment (280 for both units)that hits incredibly hard.

or fail a charge at the other end of the table
a questionable strategy and one that has been ruled against by most GW judges. no charging if you know you cant make it. but the screen idea is prety much gold and used by almost all competent generals who have to deal with their own frenzied troops.

He means that you can't declare a charge at something that you clearly can't reach, like something on the other side of the board

I know, but it's still fairly easy to declare the charge to get the bats out of the way even if you get them killed. There's usually a warmachine or something else worth charging with bats on the second turn anyway.
