How do you deal with facing multiple whirlwinds as Imperial Guard? It seems like even if they scatter they will hit something, and can ignore any cover and IG save, and wound on a 2+ or 3+. Even if veterans all come in on turn 2 and each blow up their target, the whirlwinds could have reasonably earned their points back already by blowing up a guard squad each, and this basically gives up the veteran squads. I've considered spacing out all my units hugely, but I don't usually have enough room to deploy all my units in good firing positions, much less spread them out, without giving my opponent cover by shooting through myself. So, how do I prevent whirlwinds from wiping out my infantry platoons?

Shoot them with lascannons. Lots and lots of lascannons. They're only 11/11/10, lascannons pen on a 3+.
beyond that ya, just spread out your troops a bit more. You have to remember those whirlwinds are in their element shooting guard, there's not all that much you can do but throw everything you have at them until they die.

You could also try suicide demo squads. I think its a 5 man heavy weapons team with a demo charge and drop troops doctrine. Just hope you're not playing kill points .

Shoot them...?

Unless your store only has shoeboxes for terrain, they should be really easy to see, and you should be able to spare a few guns for stunning/shaking/weapon destroying them, which is pretty dang easy to do. Autocannons should crush them.

Or play an armoured company...guardsmen become a lot tougher when they're all in tanks!

In the games I play, there is generally at least one ruin per side that is more than capable of blocking a whirlwind. Whirlwinds aren't a particularly large vehicle.

Okay then, possible solutions:

outflanking sentinels - equipped with autocannons or lascannons they'll easily put the hurt on whirlwinds

basilisk - hardly the ideal, but when it hits it will definitely mess the Whirlwind up but good

As IG you have lots of options. This first is to just put all your squads in tanks. Whirlwinds can't really do much to armor. The second would be to get some fire power on them as fast as possible. Well deployed autocannons or las cannons on your flanks should have a decent chance at being able to see targets in your opponent's back field. If that isn't working out for you, you can always go to him. Take sentanals and have them outflank. With a 48" range gun, they should have no problem getting to the whirlwinds regardless of which side they come in on. The other similar option is to go after them with drop troops. A squad with a couple of melta guns should do a number on the whirlwind. Failing all that, you could also fight fire with fire and use some long range artillery (basalisk) to trade shots with him.

Can you tell us which models you have available?

Without that info here are some generic things you can do.

Make sure at least one vehicle in the list has improved comms.

This helps vet's and other reserves come down faster. The other option is sentinnels with autocannons either flanking or just scouting up on the first turn.

Basilisks returning indirect fire.

Infiltrate on some of your squads to line up heavy weapons fire on the whirlwinds.
