Subject: Question about Dire Avenger Exarch Defend Power
|
 |
Deadly Dire Avenger
|
I was told that I was using the Dire Avengers Exarch Defend ability wrong today, and I was just wondering what's Dakka's take on it.
I am in no way a rules lawyer or a cheater so i'm nippin this one in the bud by posting this.
The codex lays it out like this word for word.
Defend: The Exarch leads his squad in a complex pattern of parries and dodges designed to avoid enemy blows.
Enemy models directing their attacks towards the Exarch's squad lose one Attack in each assult phase (to a
Minimum of 1).
My friend told me its -1 attack and that's it for each assult phase reguardless of how long it goes on for. So its always -1 and no more.
I was running it -1 attack for each assult phase to a minimum of 1
Example: Let's say the combat lasts 3 assult phases.
1st assult phase they are -1.
2nd asssult phase they are -2.
3rd assult phase they are -3, and so on till they hit a minimum of 1 attack
Again I would like to know what everyone thinks of this, and tell me if i'm wrong I can take it. Thanks.

You're wrong, and he's right. "Each assault phase" just ensures that the -1 applies to every assault phase, in both players' turns.

Janthkin has it right, if it were to work as you interpereted, the rule would read something to the effect of: "...lose one attack PER assault phase, to a minimum of one."

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.

P.S. Is't it present continuous (the "ing" form) and the "each assault phase" is the moment of the speech => no cumulative attacks no matter how you read it?
Sorry, english is not my mother's language so I may be mistaken.

Well Shade, English is loose enough that both interperetations are right. This is why GW's lack of consistent and accurate grammar are a sore spot.

There is nothing indicating that it is a continous escalating effect. The reason being that at the end of the assault phase the defend stops doing anything and even if it where cumlative you'd be resetting back to orginal value at the start of each assault phase.
