I plan on running an 1850 SM list w/ 4 rhinos (the only other armor would be a dread), and have been debating the value of Extra Armor on those Rhinos.

On one hand, the more reliable mobility provided by extra armor could prove extremely important in games, but on the other hand, 60 points is a lot :(

What have other SM commanders decided to do?

Extra armor will do something against 1/6th of all damage table results against your rhinos.

1/6

And odds are better that it's immobilized or destroyed.

Well I kind of moved near Toronto, actually.

It's worth 10 pts not 15. 5 pts you take it everytime.

Even five points can seem excessive, considering it only happens if they break your armor and even then only on a 1/6, and you only care if its before the troops have gotten somewhere.

Poor GK need to point shave wherever they can to stay competitive. =)

As stated above extra armor used to be worth it, but is it worth the extra cost now? Now that stuns happen no more often when penned or stunned I'd say no.

So say a BS4 Lascannon is shot at your rhino. In 4ed you'd expect extra armor to kick in 17% of the time, for 5 points.

Now in 5ed that is 9% of the time without cover and half that with cover,with a 3 fold cost increase. So 3 times the cost but about half of the effect.

Then figure the unit can still move decently, should it need to, via disembark, move and run.

I don't think EA is worth it at all for 15 points and even at 5 is debatable.

Honestly, the first turn zip 12", then pop smoke so they can only glance gives you a good chance that you will get to move a second turn. You can also play hopscotch with two rhinos; the first turn, the one in the lead pops smoke and you hide the other behind the first, then the second turn, swap them out and pop smoke on the second one. Pretty much guarentees you'll get at least 24" which should get you in range of most things you need them for.
