OK. so its about quater past nine in blighty, and I'm watching a new tricks repeat (UK cop show, slightly slower paced than most) and one of the key plot elements is that a historical wargames tourney burnt down, Its always nice to see our somewhat obscure hobby shown, however the look on the slightly younger female DS as the aging ex-coppers try and explain how the are NOT toys, but miniatures...

Have a read of Harry Pearson's "Achtung! Schweinehunde" which has quite a bit of info on presentation of wargaming on British TV.
For example, the 1970s spy Callan, played by Edward Woodward, was a Napoleonics fanatic.

@OP - All UK cop shows are slower paced than most. They don't have the budget to blow stuff up. Also, no guns... which in non-TV world is a good thing
On topic, I've never known eyebrows not to arch when I mention wargaming as a hobby. That said, most people don't have hobbies save messing about on games consoles or going out and getting wrecked (this latter hobby is particularly popular in the UK and may be another reason why our cop shows are so dull, because police spend most of their time dealing with drunken yobs).

Life On Mars wasn't dull.
But it did involve guns and time travel.

This is so true. Sometimes my colleagues see me reading White Dwarf or a codex at work during lunch break and give me strange looks. Like you say none of them have hobbies that I'm aware of other than shopping for clothes, clubbing or the odd videogame. Hobbies seem like a rare thing. One person looked at me like I was mad when they asked how much I spend on the models and I told them I had spent £35 on a battle wagon. I told them that the value is in the usage over time and not the initial outlay.
I did bring a few of my painted models in to show them and they were quite impressed with the details even though I've only been painting them for a few weeks and they are about half as good as some models I've seen on here. In all honesty though I'm not particularly concerned what any of them think as I am having fun with my new hobby.

The public has a mixed response where I am. Some think it's beneath them. The most unusual response so far came from a "hot little number" who declared the sketches for a "heavy flyer scratchbuild" project were "really cool."

I catch gak for it, I get props for it. It all depends on the value you place on the opinions of who's talking; but I must confess that more and mor ein life when people try to give me a ration of gak my value of their opinion goes to nil. Wonder what that means.
