Furious Charge USR gives a unit +1 to STR & INI characteristics on the turn they assualted into combat.
My question is; if an assaulting unit always attacks first (barring any special circumstances) what use is the +1 to initiative ?

I have a sinking feeling that i am missing something really obvious.

I thought that you always strike in intiative order. so if my orks, who are initiative 2 get charged by your guardsmen who are initiave 3, you strike first, but then i'll kill you.

if I charge you, my orks will be initiative 3, so we strike simultaniously, and then i'll kill you.

is that how it works?

Initiative is always used (barring special rules like cover or banshee masks) for who strikes when. See pg 36 upper left of the BRB.

Assaulting units don't always strike first, all combat is resolved in Initiative order. I think you're getting WFB rules (maybe even a previous edition of WFB, which I don't play) mixed into 40k.

Huh... so if i am assaulted in my opponents turn. I still get to attack first (if my Initiative is higher) I always thought that Initiative didnt come into play until the after the initial assault. Generally the next player turn.

? So for instance a group of powerfist weilding units will always have to take an opponents attacks before they can deliver theres. Even if they initiatiated the assualt?

oops! A group of friends and myself have just began playing WH40K again and we have been playing the opposite for a number of months now

If a unit assaultss another then it attacks first. If in the next player turn they are still locked in combat then there attacks are played out in order of initiative.

That is how we have been playing... Suddenly the Mark of Slaanesh looks nice, for reasons other than "THE LASH"

Looks like a classic case...

of Fantasy players mixing up rules.

Welcome to 40K. Definitely not the "more mature, balanced game" that had Vampire Counts and Daemons of Chaos place in nearly every top-10 slot at the US GT's this past year.

Nope, we had Orks & Chaos instead.

Banshee Masks are now I10, not always strike first. I think the only 40K "always striking first" thing left is in the DE codex.
