This may be a pretty minor point, but I was wondering if there's some sort of "best" possible size, so that the left side of the forums won't look to enlarged.
Also, is the resolution important?

The software will re-size any avatar loaded that is too big. Square shaped avatars fit the available size best.

The maximum size is 120x120. Anything larger than that will get scaled down, and any animated gifs larger than that will no longer animate.

So, is there a "best" resolution. I'm working with Photoshop anyway, so I can resize stuff like that all I want.

Personal preference really. I like 100x100, but 120x120 is best if you have an interesting image or want to make an impact.
