I'm just throwing this one out because of all the posts where people are getting their panties bunched up about race representation in 40k and to prove a point.
In the late 80's and early 90's the Salamanders were always depicted as white guys, with the Armageddon board game cover being a really good example. It depicts a blonde hair blue eyed Salamander yelling orders among a squad of other white Salamanders. An old Citidal painting book cover also depicts a white Salamander raising a flag, Iwo Jima style with 3 other marines from different chapters.
Nowadays, Salamanders are depicted as being black skinned. It's just that easy to introduce different race types into armies if wanted. As far as hand wringing goes over lack of varied races in 40k armies go, I say if it means that much to someone, then by all means these people should paint or model their armies however they want. I find it annoying, though for politically correct people to be trying to insinuate racism where none is really intended. A good example is in another of the recent spate of threads about race representation that accused GW of representing blacks from darkest Africa as Wildboy Orcs and what a slap in the face it is. To my mind, I always thought of the Wildboyz as cavemen types without even thinking about Africa or black people.
Rant over.
