Me and a friend were playing orks vs eldar and this was being disputed:

For my burna boyz it says I can either use the flamer or use them in CC as a power weapon. Now I had a Kommando with a burna, I assaulted his avatar and used the burna as a powerweapon. He said that only the unit burna boyz would get to use them as that. Also that the avatar is immune to fire weapons. I think that as long as a character has a burna he can use it just the same as a burna boy. Also since it's a powerweapon, just because it's from a burna does that mean it wouldn't hurt the avatar?

The war gear "Burnaz" may be used as a power weapon in the assault phase regardless of who uses it, and flamers, heavy flamers and melta weapons cannot hurt the avatar. In the assault phase a burna is a power weapon, not a flamer, so it indeed can hurt an avatar.

Yep any burna can be used as a power wep. - armory for burnas says see page 45....pg 45 is Burna Boyz.

As to the avatar, he is immune to the flamer not the power wepon (as it is not a flamer or a melta) your friend is mistaken on that one.

That is one messed up Avatar... both yours and in your game!

[RAW]The Burna is listed in the Ork Wargear section as see page 45. The description on page 45 does not mention that the power weapons ability is limited to only Burna Boyz. The Eldar FAQ, while not naming the Burna mentions that Meltas/Flamers by other names cannot hurt the Avatar either. Since the power weapon is not a Flamer, Heavy Flamer or Melta (the effects to which an Avatar is immune) the PW usage should still work. So I think that means the Burna as a Template cannot hurt it, but as a PW can. [/RAW] [RAI]The Burna's cutting flame is still a flame and cannot hurt the Avatar.[/RAI]

D'oh! Took too long to compose...

correct on the above. The important thing to remember is that the burna may be uased AS A POWER WEAPON IN CC if it was not fired in the previous turn. So it counts as a power weapon, leave it to orks to have weapons that do different things and count as different stuff. It sounds like he didnt want to get 8 PW attacks put on his avie so he tried to scrape some crust off his tighty whities and make you take a big ol' wiff.

By RAW, the Avatar is affected by it.
...I'm not sure that RAI even disagrees with this, really.

Fluff-wise, it would make sense to have the Avatar immune to it... but fluff isn't rules, so....

What's the point in arguing? A Kommando needs 5+ to hit, 6+ to wound. By RAW the Burna in CC is something the Avatar isn't listed as immune to but he's still got an Inv save.

You don't see wht the Eldar player would want to eliminate the Burna?
Forget the PW for a moment... you're right about that.
it's EXTREMELY possible for the Ork to roll his required 5, then 6 against the Avatar... Now, the Eldar player has a 50/50 shot at losing a wound on his Avatar.

I can totally see why he'd want to avoid ANY wounds on his Avatar.

Also, as an Ork is WS 4, he should need a 4 to hit. I don't think an Avatar is WS9. Is it?

I have another question about burnaz.

Say I give my big mek a burna (and KFF), and attach him to my mega nob squad. I assume if the squads decides to shoot before assaulting then the mek's burna is "fired" even if it does not reach anything and you then can not use it as a power weapon in the first round of combat. I also assume I can not elect to not fire his burna since if the squad shoots everyone shoots.

No, you may choose shoot with or not with any models in a squad. Page 16 of the Rulebook bottom page under "Which Models can Fire" second paragraph.

Hmm, I think I might just have to convert my Big Mek to have a Burna. Sure it is expensive, but he feels lonely when he has to stay in the wagon while the mega nobz jump out and have fun.

but.. but... SAG?? You can vaporise the Avatar then use a werid boy to turn eldrad into a squig.

Its a shame the avatar's immunity doesnt work against a burna (But it should so a note should be made). Its a 'power' weapon because its basically a glorifyed oxy-ork crazy fungus gas torch. Heat = immune.

The same should be true of a castellen incendiary missiles.. but again its not.

Its quite specific using those three different weapon types though so ill be content. Ish.

Back to OP: Why not 5 extra points, krump at I1 like da rest'o da boyz with double strength.

Well,I'm that stupid Avatar guy that orky1 is talking about. This is how it happened,15 commandos with snikrot popped up behind my perfectly healthy Avatar. I rolled to hit and missed all of them(WS 10 doesn't do jack when the best you can get is 3+)then with the burna he scored a wound. I was going to die anyway, but I questioned wether or not a PW from a burna would even affect the Avatar. My logic is that if all kinds of flame/heat weapons(not just the ones mentioned in the codex)can not hurt him, then how can a PW hurt him that is based on heat? Of course RAW and not always logic take precedence.

Unfortunately fluff wise the burnas shouldn't hurt the Avatar in close combat, but RAW then they do since they stop being flamers and turn into power weapons. The Burnas actually change tips on their weapons to turn them into cutting torches in close combat.

And my Big Mekk does not play with no stinking SAG, he is all about the KFF and the 4+ cover save he is giving my two Battle Wagons. I just think it would be a really cool conversion to pimp him out with the flamer, if my list can afford it. I
