I was lucky enough to see several of Wyeths works in person a few years back. Absolutely stunning stuff. The world is a bit poorer without him.

I went and checked out a few of his works online. Granted, it's not the same as seeing them in person, but these are my impressions. He was absolutely a master of capturing textures, but the people in the images were very stiff and nervous-looking, and he didn't capture flowing water very well. One called Siri includes a red-haired girl who looks exactly like Jenny Weasely. I prefer Normal Rockwell for this sort of art, though his work does tend to be wildly sentimental. Perhaps Wyeth was just trying to retain a measure of detachment.

The things that most impressed me was the application of the paint and the colour. Every mark is perfect. The whole surface of his works seem to glow. Wyeth used black in his colour which is a huge taboo, because mixing black paint with colour deadens the color and flattens the space. Wyeth used black, but his colour theory was so good that the black actually enhances the works.
