I have seen alot of different space marine armies played since the new dex came out. The key to any good list is Thunder hammer storm shield terminators in an LRC with a chaplin and librarian. This seem to be the bread and butter of the dex. There is not a lot of flavor or anything. It is codex ultramarine/vanilla marines. Even taking some the charectors doesn't give the list much of tactical aspect beyond being a space marine. Anybody else think so or do you think i am just wrong.

I think assault terminators in LRCs is definitely a bread and butter tactic.

I think there's 3 very solid all-around lists that the Marine dex can field:
As many TH/SS Terminators as you can cram into 2 LRCs and a LRR with Vulkan/Shrike and 2 minimal troop squads to hold down the fort
As many attack bikes and heavy bolter razorbacks as you can cram into a list with melta-ed up troops and whatever flavor of HQ you want
Sternguard with dual Gating Libbys in drop pods with razorback/tactical support

I've only gotten to play one game against the new codex; mechanized with no Termies or Special Characters. But, I'm seeing two Lysander armies being built by buddies which do utelize Terminators with Thunderhammers. At least on paper, this unit just seems too good to pass up.
It also means it's time to put away my Nob Biker squad.

Vulkan is nice but if you are going to run the Thunder hammer storm shield combo lysander is the best to lead it. however having the librarian with the gate of infinity and null zone is very tactical. Being able to take make someone reroll there inv saves and then when your terminators get stuck in the open and being able to get them into a better position just such a nuisance. Of well. The only counter to that is to through a bait unit in the open and let them hit that unit then shot every gun in your army at the terminators. Or run a lot of melta weapons and pop the LRC to take away there mobiltiy.

How so?
Vulkan makes Thunder Hammers count as Master Crafted. If you don't take Vulkan with a list that loads up on Thunder Hammers, then when would you take him?

He also makes a short range shooting armies heavy on meltas and flamers redonkulous.
Also, 7 LC termies with Khan and a Chappy in an LRC is insane on the charge, usually too much to be honest.
On paper I like the 3 ironclad, 3 vindicator mech list, although I have not had a chance to play it yet as I am waiting for some tanks in the mail =)

I don't know when I would take vulkan. Everytime I have face him he has never really been a problem. I havn't seen a good example of him in a list yet.

IIRC about Lysander is the Stubborn ability being pretty key. Surprisingly, Lysander is pretty durable with Eternal Warrior, Terminator/Storm Shield.
I haven't seen it played, but Bolter Drill on a squad of 10 Terminators has pretty anti horde capability.
I'm not saying Vulcan is a slouch, but Lysander has struck us as a very viable HQ choice. For myself, it's too early for me to determine which would be a better HQ choice.

I prefer Lysander for Sternguard lists. Lysander + 10 Sternguard podding in or riding Raider is 20 bolter shots that wound on 2s, ignore cover, or are Ap3 with rerolls for all misses.
Awesome.

Epic Fail
Vulkan may be the best of all the special characters, as he spreads the wealth army-wide. He gives all melta and flamer weapons in army twin-linkage, thunder hammers are master crafted. He is armed with a heavy flamer, a master crafted relic blade ( str 6 power weapon), and has a 3+ inv save.
If you can't find way to fashion an army with some of that sauce, maybe you should re-evaluate your skills in the realm of 40k.

Vulkan and Lysander with the assault termies is hot. Five assault termies charging nob bikers out of an LRC equates to eight dead nobs.

Vulkan is amazing, he makes drop pod armies stupid good. Do the math on a squad of sterngaurd with heavy flamers and combi flamers that get rerolls thaks to vulkan. Or a squad with melta guns, its stupid. They put out a ludicrous amount of wounds.
If you tailor an army around his master crafting ability you get a really powerful short range list.

I think a bike heavy build with vulkan and a captain on bike can be pretty brutal. Supported by some drop podding ironclads can be fun. It's just another list i've seen. Or an all speed army w/captain on bike and 2-3 full bike squadrons as troops.

While stubborn seems good on paper, I found that the default combat tactics is better. It allows you to fall back from a uncomfortable position.
In one of the recent RTTs, I had five Termies targeted by 2 Wych units each with 2 blasters. Two Termies went down and I decided to fall back. The Wyches now were left in the open in front of my army. Hello Wyches.
