Is it still necessary to upload images both to the gallery and to the articles?

Can we use the forum tag in articles now?

Somewhere in south-central England.

I had to upload the Pig Iron pics into the Article System but I may have been doing something wrong.

For someone who is an experienced computer user and editor with Quark Xpress, HTML and so on, I am having a lot of trouble getting my articles to work nicely.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

The articles / gallery integration is a little clunky but does work. If you look at any image, eg:
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1034-.html

you'll notice that there is a 'Dakka Articles:' code box along with all the forum code, etc. It looks like this:
--Gallery:2008/11/29/1034_sm.jpg--

Copy and paste that into an article and it will paste that sized image into the article. Unfortunately, formatting is not supported yet, but you can change the size of your image by choosing a different size from the drop down on your gallery page ('Recommended Sizes' drop down box). Doing so will change the code generated in the code boxes.

Annoyingly overly complex, but at least it works for now. Better solutions will be coming in the future, but not for a fair few months.

Just out of curiosity, why is the article system on a different format than the boards, HTML or wikipedia? It seems to have it's own idiosyncratic system.

The article system is based on a wiki clone that is sort of compatible with the forums. With a lot of work it was possible to integrate it fairly tightly. The wiki clone is about 80% compatible with wikipedia and you can copy and paste most wikipedia stuff without losing any formatting. HTML is also supported to a very, very limited degree - we try to focus around wiki format so that it is easier to read for people who dont know HTML. UBB is not supported as then there would be three different types of code that could be mixed and matched to create a page.

Initially I thought that people would have some vague familiarity with wiki code as well, or would not have any problems spending a few minutes learning the basics, but that has proven to not be the case. There is a big review and tweaking of the articles system pending and the issue will be revisited then. On the whole it has been quite successful and we have averaged one new article per day since launch which has been pleasing. Things could be going better, but thanks to the strong efforts of article mods and regular mods things are still going well.

And a side-note on the original question:

Although images from the gallery can be put into articles, as Lego mentioned, you currently don't have the ability to do much with these images besides changing their sizes by the presets allowed in their gallery page.

If you want to change the justification, add a border, control its size more completely, add a caption, etc, you'll need to upload that picture into the wiki article system.

However, since the gallery also automatically pulls images uploaded to the article wiki if you're planning on making an article out of some images your best bet is just to upload them to the wiki system. That way you'll have the images in the wiki for full formatting but you'll also automatically get the images uploaded into the gallery system as well.

FYI, in the future the goal will be a complete integration of gallery pics into the wiki article system so that there will be only one place you ever need to upload pictures into, and that being the gallery.
