The situation, 8 bikes are within 1" of the battle wagon, the battle wagon is wrecked or destroyed (the players didn't say), and 20 orks inside disembark. It sounds like the orks are free to do what they want on their turn, even though on the space marine turn they are unable to do anything for the rest of the turn, per the book.

It sounds like you are talking about the rule on page 67 with relation to the term 'turn' from page 9 where it explicitly states that the term 'turn' should be read as 'player turn' and not 'game turn'.

Yes, you are right. This rule sounds like it is very pointless, and would only affect the player in extremely rare circumstances.

I honestly believe this to be a typo, and GW meant this rule to cover a 'game turn'. But, since they did not write it as such, we are left with the rule to be interpreted as a 'player turn'.

In most cases Emergency Disembarkation has absolutely no negative effect on the occupants. As most vehicle destroyed results happen in the opponents turn and not yours.

The rule has two applications.

1) If your vehicle dies via "Death or Glory" in an interesting way, the passengers can't then shoot & assault.

2) (More importantly) Picture a wave serpent. You can't block the access hatch of your own transport, in order to "emergency disembark" from the front of the vehicle, and still shoot and/or assault.
