Kind of a stupid question, I know, so bear with me.

Are the Death Korps of Krieg simply the Steel Legion renamed? Because they look basically alike, and I never hear anything about the Steel Legion anymore.

the DKoK are not Steel Legion. They have different helmets (the SL had Fallshirmjager type helmets, the DKoK helmets are closer to the Stahlhelm) the coats are longer and the masks different. Also, the Steel Legion fights as a mechanized force, with lots of Chimera's and Leman Russ tanks. the DKoK fields such forces, but typically instead fights as massed infantry and heavy artillery siege armies, with tons of medium and heavy guns like Quad Launchers, Heavy Mortars, Medusa's and Earthshaker cannons.

The Steel Legion is more akin to a modern type army, whereas the DKoK is *very* WW1 themed.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Hi there

Nope, the two are quite different in terms of background, although both have to deal with toxic environments, hence the gas masks. The easiest description for them is as follows:

The Steel Legion of Armageddon are typically a mechanized formation that patrol the ash wastes of Armageddon in their Chimeras. Their style could be reasonably associated with the German WW2 Blitzkreig style of warfare. Their look is a shorter coat much like the Whermacht (I think).

The Death Korp of Krieg are an almost exclusively infantry based formation, supported by artillery and armored formations. The are geared towards longer term sieges in toxic environments. Their lives are worth less than their equipment and they are regularly used when a war of attrition is required. Think of them as being more like the soldiers in the trenches of WW1, the pawns of the ruling elite. Their helmets are also similar to the WW1 French forces.

I hope this helps.

Cheers
Dave

I don't think you know what the theory of Blitzkrieg is.

Also Steel legion are a direct rip on the Fallschirmjaeger, not the Wehrmacht.

Actually, Wehrmacht is the blanket term for the German military in general, whereas Heer's would refer to the army specifically, and fallschirmjaeger refers to the airborne infantry of the Luftwaffe, which is a subdivision of the wehrmacht.

As for blitzkrieg, I wouldnt say they are an example of true blitzkrieg per se, but they do have aspects of it in their doctrine (the fluff doctrine not the rules). They strike hard and strike fast, using hit and run tactics and mobility, and to a limited extent combined armed tactics. I would say that they are most akin to Fallschirmjaeger in form, and akin to late war SS Panzergrenadier units in function.

Basically Death Corps = WWI Germans
Steel Legion = WWII German paratroopers

Though the Death Korps look WW1 German, the corners on their coats turn back and button up which is more of a french/belgian thing. Stylistically their helmets are german shaped but the fluted ridge up them again is more french.

Blitzkrieg is "a headline word applied retrospectively to describe a military doctrine of an all-mechanized force concentrating its attack on a small section of the enemy front then, once the latter is pierced, proceeding without regard to its flank." (from John Keegan's The Mask of Command)

The Fallschirmjager were originally organized as paratroopers (hence their name), something the Steel Legion do not do. If you are referring to the late war "Fallschirmjager" units, then yes, they were motorized infantry, like the Steel Legion.

If you're talking about the appearance of the Steel Legion models, I stand corrected.

Really, the only part of the Steel Legion minis that looks anything like Fallschirmjäger equipment is the helmet, and its design is only loosely based on the FJ helmet at most. I'm not saying some of their design might not have been inspired by Fallschirmjäger equipment, but they certainly don't look anything at all like the real thing, at least not anymore than any toy soldier in a coat and gas mask looks like any other.

They're more of a loose jumble of influences, just like everything else in 40k.

I think you are arguing with Dave Taylor.

Oh, sweet tap-dancing jeebus on a rubber crutch and the horse he rode in on. Sci-Fi Toy Soldiers. They just look cool as heck. And if I had the disposeable income, all the DKoK would be mine because they just look fraking cool.

What he said.
