I use a Sabol Army Transport: http://www.saboldesigns.net/home.html
If you don't want to pay that much for a case, one of my friends use EconoBox storage boxes, and they seem pretty good: http://thewarstore.com/EconoBoxFigureStorage.html

I've magnetized the bases of my figures and carry them around in a 3-drawer toolbox. As you can see, some of the figures even get stuck onto the top of the lid for transport. Took them back and forth to 2 events this weekend and they stuck beautifully. As you can see, the packing density is much tighter than you can get in a foam tray and there is nothing for the claws of the tyranids to catch on. The top drawer is large enough to accomodate my Carnifexes and other taller figures.

As I go to 1 store and 1 store only, I leave my larger models there (MCs, warriors etc). My smaller ones I put in my GW case. Easy!

If you play at more than place then Ifurita has the problem solved.

The cheapest commercial system is Econobox. You can glue and reinforce with packing tape to make it a lot more sturdy for transport.

The hands-down cheapest would be to simply have custom foam cut in bulk, along with having boxes made.

I am exploring cardboard case storage for my tanks, as they are large, but not heavy.

But my primary storage is Chessex hardcase, which I bought for long-term storage - as it is hardcase, they stack and allow for transport.

I currently own 18 Chessex hardcases. I can store over 100 minis per case ("normal" limit is 80), and carry up to 4 cases in a small gym bag that still leaves space for my dice & books.

I will probably buy a couple more next year, when I "finalize" my minis storage.

Ifurita - What kind of magnets did you use? Rare earth? plastic magnets? I am also looking at doing something like this instead of foam.

I used rare earth magnets. The coins are to weight the bases and give them a little more heft. Here's an article I wrote with more specifics: http://kan.org/michael/mkp/bases.php

With respect to the number of figures i crammed into the toolbox, I had 5 Tyranid monsterous creatures, 65 regular tyranids, 9 deffcopters, one objective marker, and 71 other Orks.

@Ifurita: Thanks very much!

@malfred: I'm not spending 3 or 4 cents per washer when pennies are practically FREE.

Especially when I can use easily a dollar or two worth of pennies to weight bases...

I have several tackleboxes (trays are lined with the foam pieces from blisters) in addition to:
Two GW cases.
One Crystal Caste Battlehive
Several other modular tool cases.
Foam lined boxes and plastic storage crates (these house my drop pods).

I'm a Sabol Army Transport user.
I've tried and looked at many other carrying cases and there's nothing better.
While the dollar was weak against the pound I bought 2 cases plus enough trays to fill a further two cases.

The ability to customise each tray to whatever shapes you want is great, and despite being a soft case the models are very well protected.

So how many models can you get in the sabol foam trays? Say space marines. It looks like I should be able to get 28 per tray. Does that sound right?

TITLE 18—CRIMES AND CRIMINAL PROCEDURE
PART I > CHAPTER 17
§ 331. Mutilation, diminution, and falsification of coins
Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States, or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States; or
Whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered, defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or lightened—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

Basically, if your intent is fraud then it is illegal. If your intent is to use the defaced coin for some non monetary purpose, it is fine.

I still don't feel comfortable doing it, but that's just me.

An alternative to cutting up coins is small bird shot (for shotgun shells). Yakface bought some in bulk (and I bought some off of him), so he can probably help you find some if you can't.

I can do whatever I want with my pennies as long as I don't attempt to use them as coinage worth $0.01 USD.

That's what the law has always been.
