As it turns out a few friends and I have come up with a location and the terrain to run a big 40k 2500pt doubles tourny. I have a few questions if we run the tourny in central New Jersey near Rutgers university.

1) would you be interested in this? If so how interested?

2) How far would you be willing to travel?

3) Would you want a near by hotel to stay in?

4) what would bring more people, a single day tourny or a whole weekend event?

5) what kind of cost would be acceptable in your mind? $50 per team to steep?

While, I live nowhere near that area, but I'll provide some input.

Well, I don't exactly have any army worth 2500 points, painted or not, but if I did, I'd be very interested.

2) How far would you be willing to travel?

If I had a car and it was on a long weekend? Perhaps a 3-4 hour drive. Otherwise, it would have to be withint the range of a bus route.

3) Would you want a near by hotel to stay in?

If it were a weekend thing, probably. You could perhaps even take out one of the large party rooms that hotels usually have for weddings and conventions.

4) what would bring more people, a single day tourny or a whole weekend event?

Not sure, to tell the truth. If it were a weekend event, I'd strongly suggest putting it on a long weekend. To be honest, something like this is best decided based on the amount of people coming. 2500 point games are long games, and if you had lots of people, you'd need either a full weekend or a series of days over a period of time to get everyone through.

5) what kind of cost would be acceptable in your mind? $50 per team to steep?

That depends on the prize. I wouldn't pay $50 for a tourney with nothing up for grabs, and it would seriously need to have something worthwhile for 50 bucks.

I think most people are going to want more info, before they could answer the question. Price vs. accomodations will be a deciding factor. 25.00 a person for a two day event in a comfortable, air conditioned room, with food and beer nearby isn't bad. Two days in a hot fire hall, playing on green plywood with only a broken cokemachine to keep you going would be hell. As stated above, prizes will also be a factor, and how many people attending.

I'm going through some of the same thought process at the moment. We just signed a lease for additional space in the mall where my store is located. We'll be running 2-3 events per month, with room for up to 20 tables. Details on the exact nature of said events gets fuzzier as we get further into the calendar.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Not a big tourney player, but is it 2500 points for the team, or both team members field 2500 each?

Yeah, 2500 per team overall seems like a good size, we had a 5v5 match with team max at 3750 and it was pretty huge.

SM - 8060 pts
Chaos Deamons - 885 pts
Chaos Marines - 500pts

1: If it were 2500per person, that would be quite cool, and I would start making phone calls. 2500 per team... that might be neat, but less exciting. I prefer larger armies, but still, I would probably head to Jersey for that.

2: I would go to central Jersey from Allentown. Carpooling with a buddy makes it more pleasant.

3: I would rather like to sleep there if it wasn't too salty. Any drive over 2 hours and I like to be able to sleep over.

4: I wouldn't mind a weekend long thing, but I imagine some people have more restrictive home lives than I do. Still, for me, a solid two days is good. If Saturday has 4 games, and Sunday has 1 then an awards ceremony, I don't see myself staying till Sunday.

5: 50$ is a little steep depending on duration, number of games, and prizes. However, 30$ per team with nice tables and a nice venue, I could be down with that without prizes. It is a little fuzzy for me really.

A lot depends on the format. Adepticon has set the gold standard for "Team" events, and I'm willing to travel several thousand miles annually to participate in the 40k team tournament. But that didn't happen in a single year - it took a couple years to develop both the rules & the player interest. (Also, I used to live in Illinois, so I know a *lot* of the people who participate there.)

Whole weekends draw people from greater distances; single-day events are likely to draw people who can't spare a whole weekend. (I can do a single-day tourney every month, but only 2 weekend-long events a year.) Much depends on your "local" scene, and how many people you can pull in within ~100 miles.

Adepticon charges $120/team (4 people), on top of the $30/person convention badge. That represents the upper limit. For that, you get a great venue, great prize support (prizes for ~10% of the attending teams), and some phenomenal-looking armies on great terrain. $50/team would be fine, provided a solid venue and decent prizes.

A lot depends on the niche you're looking to fill. If you're looking to create (at least) regional buzz, then you need an event that is a) VERY well run, and b) distinct from other options with a similar cost. If it was 2500/person, for example, you could do 4 4-hour rounds, 2 games on Saturday & Sunday. Would you allow superheavies? Other Forgeworld models? (Select) Apoc rules? Maybe round 1 is a singles match @ 2500 pts, before rounds 2 & 3 (then you could fit 3 rounds in a single day). Heck, maybe round 3 is a singles match - that'd make for some interesting ranking opportunities.

hmm thanks for the input guys. It seems we have a lot of things to discuss now.

we were thinking 2500pts per team, so 1250 per player with adepticon style force org.

One option for Location would be near the Jersey Shore, 5 miles from point pleasant boardwalk

The other option is near Rutgers university. The one that is near RU we could charge less since the hall would be "free"

The one near Point Pleasant would be more expensive due to the cost of the hotel.

I will get back to you guys soon with more information. Until then I have a new question.

Would you like a tourny with superheavies? Or No super heavies?

A year ago, me and a few friends would be there for sure, the 8 hour drive wouldn't even be that bad.

But with today's economy and the return to our $ being worth a lot less than the US$ it just isn't financially possible.

I might suggest no superheavies at 2500 points. That would really require a mess of anti-tank to deal with at that points level. Plus, not all superheavies are created equal, so some armies would have more issues than others.

Come to think of it, many armies only have FW super heavies, which means many people would not be able to field them. The trouble with that is many people might feel put off. "I can't fight a freakin titan!" sentiments might really push people away.
