So i thought I'd build a little SM army out of my spare bits. In contrast to my others, the themes for this one are SHOOTY, and FLAMERY - lots and lots of flamers, meltas and fire weapons. We need a balanced 1750pt force. Here's my planned list at present...
1 x Captain (Relic Blade, Combi-Flamer)
5 x Command Squad (Company Champion, Company Standard)

5 x Terminators (Heavy Flamer)
1 x Land Raider Redeemer
--445pts--
10 x Tactical Squad (Flamer, Multimelta, Sgt with Meltabombs)
1 x Razorback (Twin-linked Heavy Flamer)
--240pts--
10 x Tactical Squad (Flamer, Multimelta, Sgt with Combi-Flamer)
--180pts--
1 x Land Speeder (Multimelta)
--60pts--
10 x Devastators (2 Lascannons, 2 Plasma Cannons)
--290pts--
1 x Land Raider Redeemer (Multimelta)
--250pts--
TOTAL --1750pts--
The plan would be to split the Devastators and at least one of the tacticals into Combat Squads. One tactical combat squad with meltabombs in the Razorback just in case. Two with multimeltas to get close objectives. One with a flamer an a combi-flamer to slog it out over the board. Lose the combat squad idea in Annihilation missions.
We then have two Land Raider Redeemers, one with a multimelta. One carries the Terminators in close, the other carries my Captain and his Command Squad.
Total weapon load out is 2 x Lascannons & 4 x Multimeltas for Anti-tank, 2 x Plasma Cannons for Anti-MEQ, 1 x Twin-linked Heavy Flamer, Flamestorm cannons and combi-flamers for Anti-horde.
Any changes to make?
--Is the company standard worth it or should I spend the points on more CC weapons for the Command Squad?
--Are the lascannons really needed, what with all the multimelta AT already in the army? I have the parts to swap them for Missile Launchers. What could i spend the 40pt saving on?
--Is a command squad too small? Should i use Vanguard Vets instead, maybe with a chaplain, and drop some tac marines to gain points?

- Company Standard? Naw.
- Lascannons? I don't think so. I'd take them all as Missile Launchers, take like only 7 Devs and keep them all together in the back and pound everything while they focus on the LRRs.
- Well, it DOES have less punch than 5 Assault Terminators. Your call. I use Assault Terminators and a Chaplain for 300 Pts.
I'd get a Missile Launcher in the backfield Tac squad, so you can hit around the board from the back, then maybe a Meltagun to scare tanks and keep the C-Flamer. Or maybe just ML and Flamer to save points for something else.
Trade the Shooty Termies for Assault Termies? If you plan to get up close you might as well take the more survivable Termies. Lotsa Power Weapons around!
What's your experience with the TL HF Razorback? I think it's too expensive and not a good idea to get that close. Regular Razorback can give you points for a Multi Melta in the first Redeemer and a Heavy Flamer on the Speeder. Mo' weapons!
You ever thought on taking LRC instead of LRR? You can fire ALL weapons at combat speed right before you unload.

Lascannons are goood. 10pts, so cheap. Rocket launcher are more versitile & free but youve just gotta take em for those monsterous creatures.. Atleast one.

beat me to it. I agree on the aforementioned CC termies and no banner. With vulkan, those TH's become master crafted (crazy broken), making those guys hit HARD.
Also, get an apothecary in that command squad. If you can get FNP, i dunno why you would want to avoid it...

Ok, so I've sorted my spare SM models, and this is what I have available. I'd like to use as many of these as possible, but I can always buy extra bits! I'm obviously gonna have to buy the vehicles, and some more standard marines...
5 x Terminators inc Heavy Flamer
1 x Terminator Librarian
1 x Dark Angels Azrael (going to be converted into Captain/Vulkan??)
1 x Landspeeder
4 x Missile Launcher Marines
2 x Lascannon Marines
2 x Plasmacannon Marines
7 x Bolter Marines (can have special weapons)
4 x Robed DA Marines (for veterans/commandsqd/sergeants)

Thanks, but lascannons are only 10pts in Tactical Squads - in Devastator squads they're 35pts each!

Which is why its a really great Idea to get them, that cheaply, in a tacticle squad. Things like multi-meltas can go on dreds, aswell as plasma cannons as with one (with a pod) he can easily get within 12" of rear armor & survive the aftermath and the other - it ignores gets hot + plasma cannons rock many types of sauce. (Stick with meltas on the tac squad if you get vulkan)
If your tacticals arent in a pod or a rhino then unless somthing comes to them those multi-meltas arent gonna be much use.
Vulkan = alotta points. A chaplin = less points but only ever a 4+ inv.. So it could be a good call. The chaplin does the same job for all of your thunder hammers where-as Vulkan would do the same + TL all the flamers/meltas (but you loose the ability to be able to withdraw eaisly via combat tactics).
Drop that devestrator squad for more troops. You need more troops. Add in a dred & another 10man tac squad.
Want more flamey goodness.. swap the captain for a libarian (which should have gate & force dome) and swap the command squad for a bunch of sternguard with combi-flamers and/or combi meltas (assuming youve also gotten vulkun).
You'd need to take out the command squad, captain, One LR, dev squad to fit that above in. Also add in another landspeeder or two with either more meltas or h.flamers. A deepstriking TL h.flamer template = goood.
