I don't see any rule which says that you cannot open the WWP if that unit is locked in close combat. Units locked in close combat may not move or shoot, and may only do pile in moves, but the rules on WWP just says that the model foregoes moving and shooting.

next to a stop sign

The WWP carrier cannot move or shoot if he intends to open the portal - this is a "instead of" option for the character. As such, if the character is unable to move ( ie fleeing ) or shoot ( ie locked in assault ) then the portal cannot be activated.

I didn't see any FAQ that addressed this issue. Also, I don't believe that the rules says that you can open the WWP instead of moving or shooting. I believe it states that you forego moving and shooting.

I'm pretty sure I've seen statements to the contrary before, for example that a shaken vehicle can still perform an action instead of shooting, looking now you can find exactly that in the Eldar FAQ regarding a shaken vehicle using star engines "in lieu of shooting".

@ZenMasterKel: It definitely is instead of moving or shooting, it uses those exact words in the description, but I still believe you would be able to use it as long as you don't move or shoot. Then again, there is the possibility that the core rulebook is strict enough to override it anyway in the phrase "While a unit is locked in combat it may only make pile-in moves and may not otherwise move or shoot.", I'm tired so I might be reading this wrong, but "only make pile-in moves" seems like a very strong wording which would prevent anything else, then again, it would also prevent combat resolution...

Interceptor Drones can disembark at any point during the Sun Shark's move (even though models cannot normally disembark from Zooming Flyers).

This can't be the first time this has ever come up. Yet, I've search all the internets, interwebs and even subspace signals, and nothing on the subject.

I've played DE for...hmmm, like close to 8 years now. Other than some experimenting w/ the WWP when I started I've never used it after a few games. I've still got a template I made specifically for it.

The reasons I don't use it are as follows:
1. 50pt cost can be used in oh so many other ways.
2. It's very complicated and restrictive on use. You have to be disembarked from a transport. You can't be on a jetbike or a skyboard. Once you do get it activated, troops can't even arrive from it til your next turn. So in many cases you don't even see your WWP til turn 3 at the earliest.
3. My whole army can be at or near my enemies deployment zone on my very first move.
4. In the past the only reason for really taking the WWP was to get a Talos into CC faster. With the new Run rule, I can get a Talos into CC by the 2nd or 3rd turn.

To answer you're specific question though, Toxic and Drunkspleen are right, if the figure carrying it is in CC...you won't be able to use it. My hope is that in the new DE Codex (whenever that arrives) WWP will be treated like a form of transport/drop pod that opens up on a DS.

This is slightly OT, but there really is only a single change that needs to be made to the WWP.

Give it the same rules as the portal that used to be available to the USF army. It has a dead man switch; if the model carrying the portal is killed, the portal is immediately deployed where the model was.

On a side note, I'm led to believe there is something just like this in the second apocalypse book, where you deep strike a number of open webway portals onto the field, so with any luck they will take it in that direction for the new dex too.

That would be...friggun awesome! Ofc, I wouldn't want to give up my Raiders w/ DL's...
