I'm bored, and my video shop is pretty much finished, i've gotten and watched everything that looks good
Just wondering what you guys rented this week from your video shop, and how good they were for you.
This week i got:
Enter the Dragon: My first Bruce Lee film, i thought it was awesome, like an old James Bond movie, but so much better.
Wrong Turn: Completely ripped off from The Hills Have Eyes, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Deliverance, but i thought it was pretty good. Only 1 good kill, but fun
When A Stranger Calls (Original): Just seen it then, pretty lame IMO, and quality was that really really bad 70's stuff. One BIG scare at the end though. Below average for me, hope the remake's better.
Still got to see:
Fight Club
Alpha Dog
(Heard they were fantastic)

I never buy DVDs, 'cos I find I only watch them once, although I do occaisionally buy music DVDs. My last were & Blood was shed in Warsaw by Vader & LoG's Walk with me in Hell.
The last time I rented a video was way back in the day. I think it was a VHS of the phantom menace.

I just watched Fritz Lang's Metropolis - quite good, and the production values (considering it was made in the mid 1920's) were pretty remarkable. I highly recommend.

If you haven't seen Fight Club, please do yourself a favor and watch it at your first available opportunity. Not everyone likes it, but everyone should see it at least once. I honestly don't remember the last movie that I rented. I tend to buy my favorites and watch them numerous times, as opposed to renting movies that I potentially won't like. I do go to the theater a lot, though. On that note, the last movie that I actually saw was Gran Torino. Good. Not great (some of the actors are just bad). But it really makes you think that Clint Eastwood has grown both as an actor and as a director. With one single twist, he kind of destroys all preconceptions you would have about a Clint Eastwood film (which is, in a way, a good thing). The last movie I bought? The Dark Knight. EDIT: Philsonator, whatever you do, stay as far away from the remake of When A Stranger Calls as you possibly can. One of the worst tween-demographic horror films I've ever seen, and that's saying something.

I loved Gran Torino. Unfortunately the main character immediately started reminding me of my Dad in mannerisms and it became a very difficult film for me.

The trailer was enough for me, that told me all I needed to know. I will never watch it as I know it would take an active purchase to even have the remote chance of seeing it, don't think that film would ever turn up anywhere on british telly. So no chance of accidently changing a channel or seeing an ad for a future showing and thinking 'ah go on it can't be that bad.'

Why rent when you can pirate over the internet!Well anyway,in the last while I watched numerous things the best I think where:
1)The time machine(a movie from the 50's,but I didn,t rent it we have cable and it has a classic movie channel)
2)Legend(old tom cruise flick, not very good but I watched it)
3)Green street holigans(It was funny seeing Elijah wood without hairy feet)!

I haven't rented a disc in two years, since Love Film turned into a pile of poop. I think they went through a bad phase, lost a lot of customers and got taken over again and improved, but I was out of the habit.
I buy discs that are worth watching multiple times, like Disney films (if you have children, especially daughters, they are a must.) I only buy discs on discount.
I'm currently pondering the The Prisoner box set at about £35 from Amazon. Also some Studio Ghibli films, another rewatchable genre, many of which are being knocked out for under £8.

Green Street is awful! Ellijah wood is the most unconvincing hooligan ever. Scratch that, second most unconvincing after the leader of the firm, that bloke with a cockney/australian hybrid accent. Truely terrible film. Watch with your 'comedy' filter on and it's a giggle. Football Factory, now there's a hooligan film. "Have you met my mate Stanley?" Cracking.

I haven't hired a video in over 15 years.
We either watch it on cable "Box Office" (first run, post cinema release but pre-disc) or I buy the dvd.
Last ones I bought were The Dark Knight (missed it at the cinema) and Die Hard 4 (wife likes Bruce Willis).

Edward Norton isn't the best actor by any means, but if you're skeptical about Brad Pitt, I suggest 'Se7en' (great movie). It's not so much the acting I applaud, as the story, and the whole idea behind the movie. I guess it's arguable that you could just read the book. Also, the writing, at times, is genuinely hilarious. "Marla didn't have testicular cancer. She was a liar." Classic. EDIT: Is 'Hire' Aussie lingo for 'Rent'? I have a good feeling that it is, but it's kind of confusing. I clicked on this thread originally thinking it was going to be about small business ownership or something like that.

Yep, Hire and/or rent are similarly used. Both imply a contract of sorts, and one is more appropriate in certain situations.
I think what spoiled the movie for me was that I had read the book, and liked it. A lot of "based on the book by" films tend to horribly disappoint me.

Not at all a very good movie (it's like Eurotrip with gore), but if you're looking for violence, look no further.

I read fight club and enjoyed it for the most part. Then I tried to read some of Chuck Palahniuk's other novels. Personally, I wish I had stopped with Fight Club. Palahniuk has some good ideas and solid symbolism, but he doesn't seem to trust his audience to get what he's trying to say. As a result, his books seem to end up ham fisted.
I can't remember the last time I rented a movie, but I would recommend Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. One of my all time favorites.

Soap: OI! lol i always laugh at that.
I seen the new Rambo last night and i have to say, that was probly the most violent movie i've seen in my life.
More of an exploitation flick than a movie, all he did was sit on that gun on the end, which ruined it for me, but it was good.

I just saw Pineapple Express. I thought it was hilarious (keep in mind that I'm probably younger than Frazzled).
It's not as brilliant as Seth Rogen's other movies (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad), but it definetly has it's moments. It's got some slight homosexual tendencies going on (The Belt Buckle/Duct Tape scene was just unnecessary. Ignore that until you watch the movie. ), but if you can get past that, you'll probably find yourself laughing your ass off at least once.
