I dunno...

It's simple, myself and my friend (posts on Dakka as Model Collector) would like to start historical gaming, we are probably going to use the Warhammer historical rulesets, found Here

the question is, which one? My current views are:
Warhammer Ancient Battles-in the new edition, lots more army lists etc, looks good and with some good expansions
English civil war-one of my favourite periods in history, so tempted
Warmaster Ancients-hmm, don't really fancy that scale...
The Great War-My original choice, until I found out they don't support mother Russia :(
Legends of the High Seas-Currently most tempted by this
Legends of the Old West-Sounds nice and simple, with not many models required (if so I would play Zombie Cowboys, win (x2))
Trafalgar (Coming soon)-Dunno, I'm looking more for a minis game using soldiers rather than ships
N.B. If you pick one which has expansions please list which one (if any) you think is best

My two cents Good Sir...
I have played:
The Great War, Legends of the High Seas and Legends of the Old West. I love all three of them.

If you dont want to collect alot of models and have quick, easy games... go for Legends Of The Old West.

The Great War is great, but in my opinion only if you play larger battles. It plays alot like WW1 40k.

Legends Of the High Seas I have played only 1 demo game, but I will admit that it is really good when done right.

Just my two cents.

Your 2 Cents were well spent, I have kinda been put off by the Great War because I really wanted to play Russians!!!! Legends of the Old West, I dunno, I kinda like the Idea, but (dare I say it?) cowboys aren't really my thing (please don't hurt me!) Legends of the High Seas, though, that's another matter, my current favourite is a tie between LotHS and WAB (which is currently winning in the poll, I dunno, I might do both )

Go for Legends of the High Seas if its caught your eye then possibly go on to Legends of the Old West which is the same rules but different period. Another option, if you already play 40k, is to find one of the free on-line adaptions for historical periods...

Russians were in the Great War.

I advise you to go for Warmaster because it is different in terms of mechanics and scale to the others.

Try something different, I mean.

Although the examples in Warmaster all use 10mm figures, it is easy to play with 15mm instead using the same base sizes or increase all the base sizes and ranges and use 28mm figures.

I would go for the Great War because it's an interesting period (and I'm pretty sure you could find home-brew Russian rules somewhere, or just an different WWI ruleset to use), or Warmaster Ancients, because it's a cool period with lots of miniatures available, and for the reasons Kilkrazy mentioned.

Really though, if you're going to play historicals, you should go with whatever period interests you most, and which has the minis you like the most. Nowadays you can find rules for almost anything. Don't feel like you need to be limited to the Warhammer Historicals line, although they are a decent place to start.

Thanks for the advice everyone, Warmaster Ancients could be quite fun, but could someone please give me a website or something with suitable minis? I've kinda gone off WAB because I've noticed the book is out of stock :(

It is out of stock because they are about to come out with a brand new edition soon.

I would recommend WAB or Field of Glory for Ancients. I play both and really enjoy them.

Whatever you do make sure your entire group is on the same page. It is great to different armies from the same period. It is easier to run campaigns that way or recreating historical battles.

Oh, thanks Evil Eli, I will discuss the conflict between 'Grand' and 'Heroic' scale with my fellow gamers

Whilst searching for 10mm minis it came to me that GW could be the answer, in particular Warmaster Brettonians and Arabians! Here's a sample of both
EDIT: How could I have overlooked FW cheap (For FW anyway) resin terrain!

Araby Troops, Saracens anyone?

[Thumb - Brettonians.jpg]
The Brettonian range could be used as both sides of a medieval game without fuss

A neat little Stone Bridge, only £4.40!

There are lots of companies doing 10mm figures. Just do a bit of Googling for them.

Pendraken comes to mind, also Old Glory.

I would direct you to my 10mm listing on the Gentlemen's Wargames Parlour but the site is down.

English Russia.

Simple, English Civil War, if it's your favourite period - game it! you'll enjoy it more.

Like KillKrazey said, warmaster ancients can be used to game a different scale, anything above 15mm though would need a measurements change.
Kallistra do good 10mm cheap models that could be used (£5 for 4 bases of troops and most periods catered for.

If you do great war you could search the net for a Russian list (someone must have written one!) or do some research yourself and write one (though this would take a lot of time and effort)

Personally if you like ECW and your friend doesn't mind, i'd go for that one.

Edit: Just found the Kallistra website:

Good Morning there, hope you are doing well this fine morning. As to answer your question, whatever time period interests you the most. If its ECW then go for that.

If you feel like branching out from GW games ( I know there historical but still...if they are like the legends of the old west they just use the LotR game mechaics which while being the best of the three core systems....it's still GW...) there are a plethora of different games out there.

If you are basically looking for 40k with moderen figures then I would stick with 'The Great War' and as someone else said homebrew a Russia list.

IF you are looking for something totally different might I suggest Force on Force if you want a good set of basic rules that you can use for Regulars vs regulars ( WWI WWII Korea, any 'what if scenero's for 1st or 2nd world armies) and Regulars vs Irregulars ( also known as asymetrical warfare, The 'Nam, afghanastand, iraqi vs terrorist, american vs terrorists). The rule system is a reaction based system so not a IGOUGO which is a hallmark of all GW systems (and honestly sooooo boaring IMHO). The great thing about Force on Force is that it's scale indifferent so if you want to use 28mm figgies ( GW sized) then awsome, if you want to use 15mm or 20mm awsome also.

I will admit there is a learning curve but once you get the basic rule set down the game just starts to flow and it's more like telling a story with models then it is playing a game. There are no 'army lists' or 'point costs' for this system you use real world TO&E's to model your forces. I have found it a fresh change is a stagnating industry where great games are far and few between. Of course YMMV.

The rule sets can be modified to be used for almost any period from the turn of the centary to today. One warning though, powergammers and WAAC will not like this system at all since it's possible for both sides to 'win' a game as the game isn't about mowing down your opponents it's about achieving your objectives while trying to deny your opponent same. I have found that you need a opponent who is in the 'right frame of mind' to play againsted with you.

The campaign system for both Force on Force and Ambush Valley ( the 'nam suppliment) both have interesting quarks and work quite well from what I have gathered.

There website is www.ambushalleygames.com. I suggest you check it out and poke around a bit, thats what I did and I am so happy that I did. There is a very helpful community and fourm there also where the game designers can help you with any rule questions or ideas that you might have.

With whatever you choose to do I wish you the best and hope that you have many awsome nights gamming, cause in the end that's what it's all about having a blast while pushing around some awsome models eh. =o]
