What is the best way to run these guys I was just planing on giving them HtH wepons and let them infeltrate ahead to snag objectives. I want to hear how you gear your SM scouts in 40k?

"They shall be my finest Cannon Fodder, these men who give themselves to me. Like clay I will mold them and in the furnace of war they will become cracked and broken. They will be of tissue paper and whimpy muscle. In tissue paper armor I clad them and with the mightiest flashlights they will be armed. They will be touched by every sort of plauge or disease to help further make them unhappy, all sickness will blight them. They will have almost no tactics, strategies, but lots of machines so that they can atleast stand up to a foe in battle. They are my tar pit against the Terror. They are the bulk of Humanity. They are my Imperial Guard and they will know much fear!"

I would run them as follows:

Wolfguard leader/pair of lightning claws & meltabombs
5x Wolf scouts/power weapon, 2x plasma pistol, meltagun & meltabombs + frag grenades

The WGL should also have the wolf tooth necklace.

I once used this unit against a Chaos army from the previous edition. Their tally was two Chaos dreadnaughts, plus they held up a squad of 8 Khornate terminators for several turns keeping them from reaching the main battle. It's a fairly expensive unit but they can easily get their points back plus some.

I normally run a pack with just 2 plasma pistols and a meltagun, then have them go OBEL and pop a tank on the turn they turn up. they quite often dont survive though, but I have been thinkin of tricking them out like Green Blow Flys example.

I would rather have the bolt pistol and ccw for a S4 shot and +1A.

wait wait wait wait... huh..?

The problem with wolfguard scouts is that, because they're elite choices, they compete with units that are much better than the scouts are.

However, I would use scouts as cheap disposable tank hunters. IRRC, Scouts don't come in sufficient numbers to make them a very survivable unit, and their weak armor, and higher point cost makes them a worse bargain.

As far as using them to capture objectives: blood claws, and grey hunters are a much better choice. They have numbers, better armor, better stats, power weapons and wolf guard leaders to boot. Also, since they are troop choices and not elites, they can actually capture objectives, rather than merely contesting them.

Yeah but how many elites are you really needing to bring. Wolfguard count as 1 elite slot whether there's 1 or 20 of them on the board, and Wolf Scouts are so versatile being able to come in anywhere on your opponent's board edge that meltaguns can always find a juicy target.

Can you tell me a bit about wolf guard? are they basicly terms or what? I'll probally look around the SW and look about them, tell me a bit about your experiance with them.

Well, dreads are elites, and wolf guard are too, unless they are taken as squad sergeants...

I realize that in small games you're unlikely to fill up the FOC in any category, especially with the wolves, but the fact that scouts can't capture objectives makes them less useful than other units in the codex

It depends on whether you want to make all your squads a little better, or have one squad that is freaking crazy. It generally works out the same, and it's a question of tastes rather than actual strategy. I used to play space wolves, and have happily walked away from games after using 600+point wolfguard retinue units.

For your purposes though, it might be better to spread the love amongst your units, as the list you've posted won't have the room for a crazy powerful wolf guard unit, and your grey hunter squads could use some extra oomf.

However, I'm not sure that it's legal to have wolf guard in termie suits leading regular squads of guys. you probably want to check that before revising you list

Wolf Guard:

Wolf Guard are really expensive Space Marines, either in power armor or as Terminators.

The great strength of Wolf Guard Bodyguards is that each one can be given a different loadout, and if you do run them as Termis, 1 in 3 Wolfguard (rounding up) can have a heavy weapon (heavy flamer, autocannon, cyclone ML).

So in a 7 Wolfguard "pack", you can have 3 assault cannons. This is less effective than in 4th edition, however.

Likewise, Runic Charms, which let you reroll a failed armor save. This can make your Wolf Guard Terminators virtually impervious to small arms fire, but again, this is less effective than it was in 4th.

So realistically, Wolf Guard are good units, but expensive for their utility. As a bonus, Wolf Guard only take up one elites slot regardless how many you take or how many squads you split them into.

It said they arn't allowed to be used in termie suits for Blood claws and scouts so my guys can use them!

And thanks man you've really set my threads on fire!

I'd like to add, that they are really good if you can get them into a land raider. They are always going to be fire magnets, but putting them in a LR will let them live for a few more rounds.

The Wolf Scouts are a great choice because of their ability to OBEL. I have seen players deploy their entire army to prevent Wolf scouts from coming onto the board from their edge. That is a bit obsessive but it shows the respect some players have for them. They can be a bit hit or miss if you take them and only go shooty or solely for assault. If you are going to take them you might as well kit them out. To me a full squad totally loaded and led by a WGL is not that expensive and they can easily get their points back if they take out a big tank. Seeing that that they OBEL your opponent cannot ignore them if they reach assault versus armies that are weak in close combat such as Tau and IG. I once had mine create a lot of problems for an Iron Warriors army and he was forced to turn back his heavy close combat unit to deal with them which opened his army for my Grey Hunters.

The best way to play SW is the wolf pack approach. Each unit operates on it's own but they combine overall for the winning synergy.

Omaha (or West of the Mississippi and just afew miles south of Sanity)

One of my favorite things to do with the WGBG is to load them out with assault cannons and then have them attached to a WGBL with his own Assault cannon and put em in a drop pod and have em dakka the heck out of something then mop up then next few rounds. Kinda beardy I know but it was fun to see peoples faces when I unloaded the drop pod then ask me; "You have how many assault cannons!?!?".

Ive gotten lucky with my wolf scouts as well, in one tournament they brought down 2 hammerheads and a devilfish (killing afew of the fire warriors inside too), one Leman Russ tank one Basilisk, and a Land raider a rhino and part of a dark angels command squad in Terminator armour. I used pretty close to the same layout as Green Blow Fly used but no wolfgaurd attached. Hope it helps ya make up your mind!

Thanks! I'm gonna gear my scouts for anti-tank, and use them to pop as many tanks as I can.

About the WGBG I'm going to run them as leaders first, then swap it around to see how they do as a attack group. Thanks for the advice!
