Okay, it's hard enough to find people who can stand to look at a game of Guilty Gear for more than five minutes, let alone play it for long enough to be competitive. To date I have never personally met a real player of the game, other than observation at arcades. I had one good mate a few years ago who worked out the system (he was a big fighter player, just not much of a GG player) and could pull off IKs and Overdrives well enough to make a fun game. So from the 'hardest video game enemies' I picked up that Fafnir, Chrysaor686, Lunahound have played the series. This is the place to discuss it! I primarily play Millia, and use Ky/Chipp/Venom when I need a break. As you can probably tell, I like a pretty finesse-y game. I prefer GGX2 (that's GGXX for NTSC, I believe) and GGIsuka - I haven't actually played Accent Core outside of the arcade. Any other players want to introduce themselves and their play styles?

Hi, my name is Chrysaor, and I'm addicted to Guilty Gear.
Hahah, anyway. I find that evvveryone who even picks up Guilty Gear either plays Ky Kiske, Sol Badguy, or Millia Rage. Nothing else, really, which is a shame considering the absolutely massive roster of awesome characters in Guilty Gear. Mainly, I like to stick with either Testament, Zappa, or Eddie. Chose each of them simply because I liked the way they looked at first, and ended up kicking ass and taking names with Testament. He's, to date, the only Guilty Gear Character with which I've beaten Guilty Gear X2 on the hardest difficulty. He's got plenty of downsides (surprisingly short range for someone wielding a Scythe, and his longer range attacks can miss when the enemy is too close), but I stick with him more than any other character.
I like playing Zappa simply because he's probably the weirdest playable character in any videogame. I mean, come on. A guy bent over backwards, posessed by what looks like the girl from the ring, a face on his back that shoots energy at you, wearing a black speedo under cargo shorts with a heart tattooed on his chest? In terms of playable characters, he's undeniably the weirdest. Does Frank Zappa's name proud. That, and he's got a very unorthodox fighting style with tons of different summoning attacks that will keep your enemy going WTF?
I like Eddie, I'm just not very good with him.
I tend to play a very defensive game. Unlike in most 3D Fighters, it's generally pretty easy to know where your enemy is coming from so you can block everything they throw at you, for the most part. I can pull off IKs if I really want to, but I find that it usually gets me killed in the process. So, I tend to just block and wait for a chance to counter, and gloat in your face when I just beat you with a full health bar. Grabs don't really play a huge part in this game, so it's not too much to worry about.
The exception to this, of course, is any final boss in the series. Every last one is just ridiculous, to the point where it feels like you're playing a 2D shooter with a fighting game engine.
Anyway, I really like the aesthetic of the game, and how much it draws from really cheesy 80's metal. The character designs are some of the coolest, the music is for the most part enjoyable, and the story is about as good as it is ridiculous (that's a compliment).
Has anyone actually beaten Guilty Gear Judgement enough times to unlock every character? That takes some patience...

Nice rant! I wanted to see if anyone else had anything to say before I had mine... Back in late 2006 I had developed severe RSI from a lifetime of computer games, musicianship, painting/modelling tiny figurines... and in the prior few years, Guilty Gear. I'm pretty much fine nowadays - I had a year of rest, and did everything with my left hand. Did me good, too. Millia is my extreme-offensive game. She's fast, moderately powerful, and absolutely strapped with combo potential. She is one of the more fragile characters, but has a wide range of fast pokes for use when on the defensive, and then it's straight back into the slaughter... Ky is a cheese sandwich, but his moves are extremely fun and he makes a good game. I'm not brilliant with him, though. Chipp works well against turtles, but is the most fragile character, and his attack power is absolute rubbish. Still, his teleporting ability and extreme speed screws with human opponents. Venom was the first character I played when I got on GGX in the arcade many years ago... but I've only recently tried to master him. He makes a tricky game - lots of staggering moves and unpredictability are his advantages, but a limited moveset, relatively slow, vulnerable specials, and slow tension buildup makes him interesting to use. The cheesy cock-rock music throughout the series is simply the best, and that's all there is too it. The fact that the music is mostly composed by the character designer just makes it even better. GGX2 uses Survival Mode for character unlocks - my record is about 240 wins with Millia, but that took a couple of hours and it was many years ago. If you haven't seen the BlazBlue trailers, you ought to check those out too. It seems a pretty similar game, but hopefully more refined.

Yeah, I am a bit of a turtler. With 2D fighters, at least. 3D is a whole different story.
Judgement is an absolute combo whore. I love it. Also, I've been trying to get into using Slayer, because I like his orthodox fighting style and his ability to teleport instead of being able to run, but I just can't. His combo output and damage is kind of sad, especially considering that he has the shortest range in the game.
Even if Ky does seem a bit cheese-tastic, my vote actually goes in for Faust having the potential to be the cheapest character. Long range, decent speed, good defense, lots of damage, and very good combo output just makes him so frustrating at times. That, and getting your ass kicked by a ten-foot-tall cross between Dr. Jekyll and Mary Poppins is kind of embarassing.
I've definetly checked out BlazBlue, and it looks so polished. The only thing I will miss from Guilty Gear (if BB ends up as good as it's looking) is the awesome character roster.

I reserve Faust for freaking the sh1tting gak out of new players. It almost guarantees that they never play it again, too.
My old mate who I played it with (this was highschool days) mostly played Slayer, and started to get a mean game going before we parted ways at school's end. He's definitely fast, and out-pokes almost everyone. High difficulty is a pain to play against Slayer, because I play air characters and he can take them out moderately well.

I've loved Guilty Gear ever since I first played it, back when GGXX#Reload or whatever absurd title they gave it when they ported the game to X-box. I was crushed to discover that when I replaced the aging X-box with a 360, it was not immediately compatible. fortunately they have since resolved that problem.
But back to the game. I play May as my primary character. The onslaught of dolphins, and a girl wielding an anchor several times her size, is absolutely priceless. The orange pirate outfit only helps matters. I tend to play a disruption game. Nothing interferes with most ranged maneuvers quite like May's anchor slide. Sure, she has terrible overdrives, average just about everything else, and an all but unusable instant kill- but she's reliable, sturdy and easy to underestimate.
I wish I still knew a player near me. This game really is at its best in multiplayer mode.

for me, i love and hate GG games.
absolutely love the art / the way it plays but...
i have alot of trouble doing the special attacks , and imo
it should be easily executed like say... Marvel vs capcom.
where we can focus on timming our attacks, not struggling to get a move out. My fingers are always red and swollen by the time im done 1 hour of game.

Pretty much all of the moves are still quarter/half-circle/dragonpunch based, just like Marvel Vs. Capcom. Do you mean the half-circle-back-then-forward-slash for overdrives? Otherwise, I just see the VS type games as any other over-the-top Street-Fighter clone. Or did you play MVC on Auto mode? I think Guilty Gear X had an auto mode, but none of the ones I own do. I sure a hell got some thumb blisters on the d-pad hand when I started playing GG on a PS2 controller, but once you get the callouse it's better than a stick.

stuff like Dizzy's over drives yes.
if i play it with a stick , usually the spot between middle / ring finger gets bruised ( really purple lol )
especially those smaller sized sticks they are really awful.

I feel that an arcade stick will always work better with any fighting game than a handheld controller.
My twitch reflexes just might be better with my full hand than only my thumb. I guess the PSP really isn't half bad, not quite as good as the PS2 Controller (for fighting games), but not nearly as bad as any X-Box controller. Still has nothing on my half-broken arcade stick (loose buttons come from hours and hours of continuous play).
Since I play bass guitar slap/fingerstyle, callouses have never been a problem for me when I play a videogame, no matter if it's Guilty Gear. And if you get bruises on your fingers from playing with a stick, then damn, you must be slapping those buttons pretty friggin hard. Frustrated, maybe?
I find it funny that playing an hour or two of Guilty Gear makes me hyper-focused, so then when I switch to a game like Tekken, I absolutely destroy (Even if Tekken is much more about combo memorization than reflexes, I still get much better).

Im the exact opposite of you lol , when i play fast paced games like GG or MvC , and if i switch to a slow 3d game, my brain usually
started to lag with the slow pace. that or you can call it falling asleep ><

I play Nina in Tekken... if we want to change the discussion in that direction.
I'm fine with sticks, I just find dpads more economical as far as movement is concerned. Never tried a fighter on a PSP pad...

Well, if you say so.
My two main fighters in Tekken are Kazuya and Bryan Fury. In Dark Resurrection for the PSP, I have Kazuya, Bryan, Lee, Law, Heihachi and Steve up to the 'Divine Fist' Rank in arcade mode, with Kazuya at 0 losses and Bryan Fury at 5 losses (Divine Fist is the last rank you can get, and I play on Hard. Very Hard starts to get ridiculous, and on Ultra Hard, if you even get hit once you end up getting juggled to death by some ridiculously good AI). To pull that off, every time I pick up the game I make sure to practice against AI until I can K.O. one without their healthbar resetting (It resets after every combo) before I go into Arcade mode. With lower rank characters, it doesn't really matter.
I've been playing Tekken since it first came out, and I have to say that it's my favorite Fighting Game series of all time. A lot of people will call it a 'button masher', but I guarantee if you put me up against someone who does, they won't know what hit them. It's accessable to someone who doesn't want to take the time to memorize ten hit combos and juggles, but when you do it takes the game to a whole new level.
Kazuya might be the end-all generic fighter of the series, but he's been around since the beginning and he's absolutely the most balanced. His basic moveset (without getting in to relying on any memorization) is extremely useful, and he's got plenty of power while having somewhere around average speed. His juggles rely on a lot of pauses, which can be difficult to pull off, but once you get a feel for him, he's just untouchable.
Bryan Fury I mainly play because I just like him. Not the easiest character to play, but his running attacks are absolutely beastly, and can easily be used to beat any character into submission. He's a little slower than average, and his juggles take some work and a lot of good timing to pull off, but I stick with him because I think he's probably the coolest character.
A lot of the ghosts (Online recorded AI of other players' techniques) I run into are really inconsistent, and it makes you think that some people just cheated their way to the top. I've seen some Tekken Lords that are easier to beat than those in the Dan rank.
I really miss being able to play Tekken 5 with my arcade stick, but Dark Resurrection on the PSP is worth the sacrifice. Waaay more customization options (more than twice as many for each character), no crappy non-fighting modes, An awesome new Dojo mode, and hell, they even threw in Tekken Bowl from TTT.
