To celebrate the landing of the First Fleet in Australia and the beginning of British Colinization of the continent in 1788 we get a public holiday, wave flags, and eat sausages from the BBQ.

Ahem. Yep, it's another of our many excuses for a long weekend. We even give ourselves a day off on the Queen's birthday, when they don't get one in the UK.

Australia Day is also known as the Cutural Dominance Celebration, Invasion Day or Burn-A-Flag Day, depending on your political stance. People drive their utes around with huge flags off the tail end that obscure vision at intersections, which would be almost acceptable if everyone wasn't drunk all day.

It's a rainy Australia Day where I am, which is hopefully a good sign for our last several years of low rainfall. I started drinking yesterday at midday - it's currently 10:33 am and I'm still at it.

Weren't the Aborigines of Australia considered wildlife (under Australian protection laws and such) until very recently? I mean like within the past fifty years or so?

For us it's merely a way to pass the time in the 6 and a half minutes we have of summer. For you, the basis of an entire culture.

Yeah, the English, sent their worst criminl scum to an island so far away, they didn't know a lot about it apart from "here be dragons", where the sunshine was plentiful, the beaches have clean white sand, and it only rains for part of the year.

Brilliant idea, fellas.

Mind you it also has something like 6/10 of the worlds' most dangerous/killy critters contained inside its boundaries - snakes and spiders that WILL kill you if you look the wrong way at them. Sharks and crocs that will just eat you. Birds and strange mockeries of creation (platypi) that can also give you a severe bollocking.

Hmm, maybe they were onto something.

A lot of Americans are descendants of criminals and scum too. Australia got them after a certain date because the new leadership wouldn't take any more.

Anyway, as I'm not technically Australian-born (I was a month away from being born in England), I don't bother with Australia day much.

how do they react to humans , can they be tamed if raised from a joey?

I have no idea whether or not its legal to raise a kangaroo, but I know that people do it. You will need to be on a farm or multiple acre block for it to be viable. It doesn't really work with anything less than that. You'd also want it to be a grey and not a red kangaroo, because the greys are smaller and less likely to wig out and hurt you.

AFAIK, you can have some native animals as pets (with a licence), but i'm not sure kangas fall under this (certain lizards and birds, do though.).

I'll echo the Sebster, though. You'd want an eastern grey if you could, as the big reds tend to wig rather easily and they are big buggers (can leap as high as 8' with a good bound - most fences aren't really a problem for them.)

We don't farm kangaroos, actually. They jump too high to fence them in, see. We just cull them because apparently there are a few million too many.

By the way, if you've seen the claw on a kangaroo's rear legs you might change your mind. I've seen a kangaroo rip a dog's intestines out with that thing...

As a matter of fact, the mainland is suffering from a heatwave at the moment. As in 40+ degree Celsius heat. It's starting to cool off in Tasmania though; we've had rain and 20 degrees C here.

I used to live work in an aboriginal community out west and never once was threatened with violence so where the 'killing of white people' is coming from, I don't know.
