Hey all,
i was just wondering, because im not really a big fan for the models representing imperial guard, could i use some other models instead, would you allow this, and what are your thoughts about it.
if it is allowed (and ill check with local gamesworkshop) i would use hobbyco minis, i havent checked the scale for them but fingers crossed.

oh and if it happens ill either have an ANZAC corp or a british commando style.
C&C

edit: i just found out the 8th army is the way im going and they are scale 1:72 if that helps

okay, is this for a normal 40k game 1/72 is way out of scale... 1/48 is closer if you want to use historical minis.

It depends on who you are playing against, and whether you care about playing in tournaments ever. Also as salad fingers said be careful and get the scale right if you use non GW models.

now i can understand not liking certain units of an army, but not liking the whole army is a bit OTT. why not just choose a different army???

I think you need to broaden your conception of what the Guard can be. The following is an incomplete list of official Games Workshop miniatures equipped with Lasguns or Autoguns. All ranges (except possibly Scavies) also contain at least a few different heavy and special weapons. With the exception of the Rogue Trader and Necromunda plastics, all of these miniatures are either still in print, or else are metal, and thus easy to buy used and strip down. (It's also worth noting that the plastic Cadians and Catachans look significantly different than the 2nd Edition metals.)

Rogue Trader
-Generic-looking Imperial Guard "Necromunda Spiders" (metal and plastics)
-Squats (metals and plastics)

2nd Edition
-Cadian Shock Troopers (metal)
-Catachan Jungle Fighters (metal)
-Ice Warriors of Valhalla (metal)
-Mordian Iron Guard (metal)
-Praeortian Guard (metal)
-Tallaran Desert Raiders (metal)

Necromunda
-Cawdor (metal)
-Delaque (metal)
-Escher (metal)
-Goliath (plasitc and metal)
-Orlock (plastic and metal)
-Redemptionists (metal)
-Scavies (metal)
-Van Saar (metal)

3rd Ed.
-Cadians (plastic)
-Catachans (plastic)
-Ganunt's Ghosts (metal)
-Steel Legion (metal)

4th Ed.
-Vostoyvan (metal)

Upcoming
Re-cut Catachans (plastic, rumor)

In addition to all of these possibilities, plastic Cadians and Catachans have allowed many armies to be made combining different sprues (Bretonian bodies with plastic Cadian arms; zombie sprues mixed with Catachans, etc.)

EDIT:And how could I forget Forge World, which has fleshed out many of the "classic" lines and also created several whole new armies (Death Korps of Krieg, Elysian Drop Troopers, etc.) The Imperial Guard have the widest model range of any 40k army.

GWs will only let you play on their tables with GW models(or conversions that are primarily GW, plasticard scratch builds aside).

1/72 is way off, it wont match up at all. GW and probably no official event is going to allow another manufacturers minis. GW has limits set on how much of a mini can be converted from non-GW parts so forget about whole models.

Well not 100% true. I've seen someone who works at GW build a fully converted plasticard mini. I have also seen GW let you use them if they are a good enough conversion. Then again, my FLGS is pretty nice to everyone.

Are you familiar with all the sub-armies of IG?

DKoK I think are some of the coolest mini's in the game although it wouldn't be the cheapest army to build. Especially for a historic look.

You might also consider The Assault Group and Artizan Designs for 28mm scale minis from different real world forces. Again, official events and GW stores will not let you play with these figs.

Im guessing its mostly a money reason why he doesnt want to buy and ENTIRE army of IG. Ive seen those smaller army minis in hobby stores and they are alot cheaper then IG

You dont have to buy an entire 2000pt + army in a month. There are many games you can play with just a squad. Take your time and slowly buy your army.
