From using other forums, there are a couple of options that I've found useful that could work here. I don't know if they only work on the other forums due to the way that those forums are constructed, as all of the ones that I've seen with these features have a very similar style. Legoburner, if you want me to send you a link to the other forums to see them in action, just let me know.

1. 'View New Posts'. By clicking this you are able to see all of the posts that had been made since you last logged on. If you click it whilst on the Forum Index, you get all posts made, and if you click it whilst in a particular subsection (eg Dakka Discussions) you can see all of the posts made in that subsection.

2. 'Mark all threads as read'. By clicking this, you could make it so that the 'skip to first unread' clicky link disappeared from all threads made, up to that point. Again different options depending on where you click it - forum index vs subsection. The idea of this being much the same way as it functions now in that if you have read everything in a particular thread, the 'skip to first unread' doesn't appear, but it makes it more controllable by the user.

As I said, just my thoughts of what can be useful, and I'm sure there are many things you'd rather be doing, but there you go!
