Whenever I am sent a PM, I get an email. The email text is:

Any reason the email isn't sent as html, so as to make that a clickable link?

It depends on the email client, but it is a little bit buggy yes. What email client/service are you using?

I get my mail through Michigan State University (lifetime account). It has a web interface. I also use Eudora 7 (via POP3).
