Well, I don't have the magnets or toolbox for what I plan to do for a case yet, and I'm going to be doing some stuff with my minis tomorrow, so I need a quick fix that will suffice for a trip or two. For my Grey Knights, it's a modestly sized ~750 point force. I already have an old cardboard box cut up with compartments to fit each mini. It's not luxury, but it'll do until I get the things I need to make my case.
However, there are two models that I want to show off tomorrow, Ghaz and Typhus. Now, what I have in mind is a metal tin filled with tissue paper or toilet paper(explaining the large volume missing to the parents will be... awkward...). But, I'm wondering if the models will be safe, close to one another in such a situation.

Tissue paper / toilet paper will *not* cut it.
Try bubble wrap instead.

You would want towel , it have lots of volume, yet none abrasive and make a nice snug fit.
TBH i use my towel + shoe box more then my 2 GW cases.

Oh really now... a towel... I'll grab one before I go to bed.
I have driver training tomorrow(last lesson ), so I'll be taking them with me for that, and I don't want them to get damaged during the trip(it's not like I'm a bad driver... I've just had a few... emergancy stops...).

Yes a towel, but not too thick! you need to be able to fluff them around your minis so its nice and tucked in.

Aslong as its fluffy enough to fill the box so it wont move around ,
and thin and fluffy enough to wrap around your figures like say arms, weapons or w/e
and long reply D; i was gluing stuff and it fell, couldnt find it -_-

Yeah, well... I'm cleaning someone's laptop... so there...
It's an old one though. 256MB of RAM, and a 500MHz processer. Makes all the scanning software I use go super slow. Ended up bluescreening a few times because it just ran out of RAM to check all the viruses too.
And worst of all, it was the win32 virus. Glad it's gone now.

My wife's quick fix since we don't have the $ to get her an army transport case is as follows:
(She works in the produce department of the local grocery store and found something very cool.)
Grapes come packaged in a foam egg crate type carton which she washes with a damp soapy washcloth or paper towel and lets it dry before she cuts the foam to size to fit in a plastic tote. She uses thinner foam (like the top foam for army transport cases) between the sections to further pad the minis.
The foam lies somewhere in thickness and protection between actual egg carton firmness and mattress padding egg crate foam softness.
It doesn't give a ton of protection but it won't mess your models up if transported properly either.
I'm sure if you ask your local grocery store's produce manager they'd save some for you.
You could also buy the foam very cheap at any craft store.
The other option would be to buy a egg crate style mattress pad and use a box cutter or heavy duty scissors to cut it up to fit a tote. They are relatively cheap and with a large enough tote you could transport a huge army for 1/2 or less the cost of an army transport case!
I have a buddy who mods plano plastic bits boxes and lines them with blister package foam to transport all his armies! He keeps these in totes and even made a homemade army transport using plastic storage baskets (They look like "in box" file holders for desks but deeper) velcro strips to hold a few of them together and cheap carry straps (like the ones on most army transport bags) with key rings to hold the straps to the baskets. It looks goofy but works well.
If you're going this route I'd suggest buying a contractor's wheeled tool box. They hold quite a few of the plano boxes, break down for easy access, and normally have a few pull out trays for storing dice, tape measures and stuff. They are also very cheap and can be outfitted with army transport or battlefoam foam inserts at a later date to make a huge army transport! Plus they're usually very waterproof. what army transport can boast that?

You can buy bubble wrap envelopes that have a tacky seal. They are pretty nice for the one off figures.

I have an army transport battalion but find myself rarely using it as my old style plano tackle box (with the drawers) is so much easier to load and my chaos minis don't snag nearly as much. I can fit all but my vehicles and monstrous creatures in there. I padded the 'cells' with foam bought from the hardware store, the thin stuff used for airconditioner filters. Works great.

So, does GW just hate armies that are on 40mm bases? I started an Ogre army and have no way to transport it yet. I love the GW ones (use em for my deathguard and soon my renegade guard as well) but it seems I am SOL if I want to use one for my Ogres.
