Hey guys, first post here on Dakka. I figured I'd skip out on the intro thread and just combine it into one since I'm going to be making this blog thing anyways

First a bit about my hobby experiences: I've been playing Warhammer (in all forms, including specialty games) for 13 years now, and obviously love it to bitz. I'd consider myself a pretty good painter and I'm just getting into the bigger projects with regards to green stuff. My biggest problem was/is that I'm a very slow painter. I haven't painted an army in YEARS. I would mostly just find a model that caught my eye and paint that. However during this time I always remained true to one thing. Chaos.

So that's where this starts... some of my friends and I are firing up a Mordheim campaign and I thought that was a perfect opportunity to get into the painting groove... something I have not done in a very long time. I've been painting like a madman for the passed couple of weeks, and completed my entire warband of 15 models (while this may not seem like a lot, it is to me!). I'll post some pictures of them in a bit. We also decided to start a 40k campaign which will take place after the Mordheim one.

Naturally I selected Chaos. I've always wanted to do a Slaaneshi army but never had the money or (apparently) will to complete it. The completion of the mordheim warband really gave me the motivation I needed to push myself to do it, and while I haven't started it just yet, I have ordered everything from various sources (mostly eBay, hooray for getting brand new boxes of stuff for half price!). Since it's all in the mail right now I am able to plan my army in a bit more detail than just rough sketches in my mind. I've big plans for this army and can't wait until it gets here so I can get started on it. More importantly, I wanted to share it all with you guys since lurking here for a while I have determined this is an excellent community of like-minded individuals (although some of you are loyalist scum ).

Here's the list of the models I've got on the way (I had some other stuff kicking around in my bitz box(es) but thought it a better idea to get completely new models).

HQ

Sorcerer
Lord
Terminator Lord

ELITES

10 Chosen (5 Meltas)
5 Terminators
4 Assault Terminators
10 Possessed
1 Dreadnought

TROOPS

8 Noise Marines
8 Noise Marines
10 Chaos Marines

FAST ATTACK

5 Bikes
10 Raptors

HEAVY SUPPORT

14 Havocs (4 Heavy Bolters & 4 Autocannons for variety/choice)
3 Obliterators
1 Predator
1 Vindicator
1 Defiler
1 Land Raider

DAEMONS

10 Lesser Daemons

TRANSPORT

1x Rhino for Chosen
1x Rhino for Possessed

...and that's pretty much how its broken down. I've got lots of units for some variety and choice.

As the models arrive, I'll take pictures of my progress and explain what I'm doing with them with regards to conversions and such. As I said, I've big plans for this army and any and all comments, points, criticisms or whatever else you can throw at me is all welcome and appreciated.

First up is my 400 point Combat Patrol list (I'll be painting entire units at a time, so even if I'm not using the entire thing, they will all get painted so I don't have to go back). My main opponents are Orks and a Space Marine Scout list (yes, it is awesome).

5 Chaos Raptors - 100 pts
6 Noise Marines (all with Sonic Blasters) - 150 pts
6 Chaos Havocs (4x Heavy Bolters) - 150

I managed to score several pairs of the wings from the Possessed box (as well as the ones from my own box 'o' possessed, hehe) and thus the Raptors will have wings instead of those weird jump packs (which look rather silly).
The Noise Marines all have Sonic Blasters, and nothing spectacular is being done to them. Same with the Havocs (minus the Sonic Blasters, of course).

Since it's a combat patrol to get re-acquainted with the 5th edition rules, I thought that this force would be pretty decent against a light to medium armoured enemy. Again, as mentioned, once they arrive you will see them sprout glorious colours of... glory!

Anyways this is the first of many posts here on Dakka, and obviously the first of this blog. I hope that anyone reading it (once the pictures start rolling in) is inspired, awe-struck, or some other random emotion that makes sense. Thanks for your time, and keep checking back for more pictures/progress reports

EDIT: Here's those Mordheim pictures I promised. I really only spent time on the beastmen, mutants and possessed. The rest of the models I just wanted to finish! The Magister was inspired by the Warhammer Online Chaos Zealot. Enjoy! (Click to enlarge)

EDIT AGAIN: Apparently I have some pictures of my Farseer (once again, random model I picked up to paint) on my Imageshack account, so here it is. Hope you guys like it.

NOTE: Pictures are in my gallery, so please check them out there and vote! Thanks!

Good idea! I posted them up in the gallery (quite a handy feature that is).

On a sadder note, my airbrush died (that's what I get for buying a cheap one) and so now I must go buy another one so I can paint my Emperor's Children.

Speaking of which, I forgot to mention the colour scheme! My main colours (ie plates of armour) will be blended from Chaos Black to Liche Purple up to Warlock Purple with perhaps a very tiny bit of Tentacle Pink. The trim on the armour will be Chaos Black, lined up with Adeptus Battlegrey, Codex Grey, then finally Fortress Grey. Chosen and Terminators will have gold trim.

I need some help deciding what colour to paint the wings on the Raptors. Id like them to be all the same, so I was thinking some kind of blue (since blue goes well with purple). What do you guys think?

Quick little update here... received the Terminators, a Rhino and a box of Emperor's Children today. Also I started assembling the Daemonettes (since they are plastic and I'm not doing any conversion on them I'll spare you the pictures of them ).

I figured out the colour scheme for the possessions/wings. Codex Grey with a bit of Liche Purple makes it look sorta pastel/dull purple (reminds me a bit of chalk, actually) which will suit perfectly. I got the idea from this website: http://www.minibucket.com/page/2/

For the Defiler I was thinking about creating either a lion or a snake. I've planned out the lions head which would look awesome but I can't figure out how I would do the body so I probably won't do that (unless someone convinces me otherwise).

The other idea I had was a snake. Arguably more Slaaneshi than a lion, it will be easy enough to do with one Defiler box and a bit of plasticard + GS. Any ideas would of course help.

Not related to 40k, I've almost completed the centerpiece for our Mordheim games. A huge 14"L x 18"W x 12"H building that could probably house a game in itself . Pics on that to come!

Sorry for the delays in pictures, I'm fleshing out the ideas as much as possible as I wait for items to come in the mail... isn't that what a blog is for, though?

Man those models look fantastic. Love the blending on the arm of Kabaal from blue to flesh and his giant gaping maw.
And the skin tone of Lazarus -being careful to show the shadowing of his muscles.

Very nice!

Thanks! I'm going to be getting a new digital camera tomorrow (hooray!) so I will take more pictures of any of the models upon request.

Progress with the army! I converted the Sorcerer a bit. I have the model with the Force Staff, so I chopped off that ridiculous looking icon that was on there and replaced it with the Slaanesh icon from the Daemonettes box. It's amazing how such a simple thing can make such a huge difference!

I've basecoated the Daemonettes with the airbrush (saves soooo much time!) and have started the skin on one of them. I think I may finish painting this one so I can show you what the finish product will look like. Sadly I can't finish it to its entirety because the wash set I ordered is in the mail (blast!). Basically its lots of purple/grey... and I'll probably will give them pink hair too (seems fitting). I'd be painting right now but my back hurts

I'll edit this post tomorrow after I get my camera, and I'll have some pictures too (yes I realize how boring text can be, haha).

EDIT: Turns out I didn't like how the Daemonette(s) turned out, so I'm going to have to dunk them in some brake fluid. Kinda disappointing but I learned one key thing: stop testing paint schemes on models I'm using in my army! I'm probably just going to blend from the Liche Purple/Codex Grey mix up to Fortress Grey, then give it a Leviathan Purple wash once that comes in. After that, touch up the extreme edges with Fortress Grey again. Kinda sucks, but the way I was painting these was not only impractical but would have taken forever and a day which is far too long! Pics of the terrain and the sorcerer will be up tonight.

EDIT AGAIN: I just finished doing the first step of the armour on the Raptor squad and it looks awesome. I don't want to do anything else to it! Just need to do the highlights on the armour with Warlock Purple and then I can start on the details. I separated them into 4 pieces; legs, left arm, right arm, head & body combo. This allows me to get into all the places I need to without having a zillion different pieces to paint, as well as when they are complete I can assemble them easily as well.

Finally some pics for you guys. Sorry for the long wait. First up is the building. Very large centerpiece that could probably house a small battle in itself. It was made with some sort of photography board (the name escapes me) but it's textured and looks perfect (not to mention it being sturdy). Also, I've used a crapload of balsa wood to make pretty much everything. If I didn't have a hot glue gun I think I would go insane. I've still a lot to do on it but should get it done pretty quick. Window frames, rubble piles and dust/debris will not take a whole lot of time. Painting it on the other hand...

For the Raptors, I've decided against using the Possessed Wings (I have 10 of them if anyone wants them!) since they are rather large and while yes they look really cool, don't have the right feel that I want for my army. Having said that I think the normal Raptor models look stupid (well, their helmets and feet are cool, but the rest of them are goofy, not to mention they are in the air and suffer from the "I'm really tall so you can shoot me over terrain" problem). Simple remedy was to use the Raptor jump packs with normal Chaos Marines. The result is perfect for my application and I feel that it fits perfectly. As for colour scheme, I painted them using the airbrush (still getting used to it, bear with me!) and first did a coat of Liche Purple (making sure to leave some black), followed by Warlock Purple. Now I need to paint over the details with black and then paint them whatever colour I'll be painting them. Also, I'm going to replace 2 of the Bolt Pistols with Meltaguns since if I ever take any special weapons, it will be those. Once I cover the stuff up with black I'll be gluing them together and taking some more pictures. Shoulder pads and jump packs will be done later.

Instead of linking each individual picture, here's the link for the entire gallery. Pictures aren't of greatest quality but that's because there's too much black so it seems to be masking the details a bit. These pics are just for a general idea of how the colour scheme is going to work.

Chaos Raptors <-- CLICK!!

EDIT: Almost forgot! Here's the Chaos Sorcerer. Also the Daemonettes are taking a bath in some Castrol Superclean (which is suitably purple!)

More stuff came in the mail today. The Defiler, 4 Bikes (I had 1 already to make 5 total), Terminator bitz and some Lightning Claws. I couldn't resist the temptation of prepping the Terminators so I stuck 5 of them together and decided that they will most likely be the next thing I paint after the stuff I'm currently painting (10x Havocs, 8x Emperor's Children, 10x Raptors).

I just finished stripping the Daemonettes. That Superclean stuff is clearly amazing. Got 98.3% of the paint off (give or take ). Now they smell like Fresh Green Apples! Haha.

Also, I got the armour of 18 more troops done. Now comes the long and tedious task of painting all the details black on 28 models *twitch*. On a related note, it only took 2 hours or so to do the armour on those 18 models. If I were using a normal brush I wouldn't be anywhere near this far done! Also the results are awesome (mind you I did make a couple mistakes here and there but you have to really look for them and even still they arent too bad).

Pics to come later on. I need food!

Definitely need a break for the night, haha. Fixed up all the areas on all 56 arms with Chaos Black and did 2 CSMs. I must say they look AMAZING touched up. The only problem is they take between 10 and 15 minutes to do, which equates to about 7 hours. Ouch. Next time I wont do 3 units at once. Here's the breakdown of the colour scheme in detail.

Armour: Chaos Black > Liche Purple > Warlock Purple
Horns: Scorched Brown > Khemri Brown > Dheneb Stone
Weapons: Chaos Black, Boltgun Metal, Shining Gold
Details: Boltgun Metal, Shining Gold
Robe/Cloth: Red Gore > Blood Red
Hair: Blood Red > Blazing Orange > Firey Orange
Power Weapons: Blood Red > Blazing Orange > Firey Orange > Golden Yellow > Skull White
Eye Lenses: Dark Angels Green > Snot Green > Scorpion Green
Skulls/studs: Boltgun Metal
Tubes/Cables/Wires: Red Gore > Blood Red OR Regal Blue > Ultramarines Blue

Terminators/Chosen will have Gold trim
Champions will have Silver trim with Gold shoulder pad trim
Everyone else will have Silver trim all around as it makes it easier to mix and match (as well as looking infinitely better than just black)

Daemonettes have been reprimed and ready to go after I'm done all these. Can't really decide how I want to do the bases though. I was thinking about how I did them for my Mordheim warband (check my gallery for pics).

Picked up my Sonic Dread w/Blastmaster from the post office today too. Very excited about that! It looks awesome. But sadly it must wait.

After I finish some more of the CSM I'll take some pictures of them so all of you can see how clean and smooth they look now!

Received the Land Raider, Predator and another Lord (I used one for a Terminator Champion). Also here are some pics of what the armour looks like. You can zoom in super far (hooray for good digital cameras) and you can see the atomization of the airbrush. You can't notice this in real life, even if youre really close. Note that the armour isnt washed, nor is the metal. This will occur when they come in the mail

What do you think of the colour scheme? Comments are encouraged!

Arms are the same way as the rest of the armour. I'll just be gluing them on as I complete the details. Any excess glue from over excitement of having something completed will hopefully be covered up with matte varnish. I have about 80 or so of the Emperor's Children shoulder pads so that's obviously going on the left side. I wanted to keep the arms separate from the rest of the model so I could get in all the details. Especially since I was using an airbrush to do the armour plates. It just made it much easier so I didn't spray my colours all over the place
two_heads_talking wrote:wow, I like the blending. Do you have a write up of how you did that? I'm mainly looking for color transitions.

As mentioned I used an airbrush to do it, and I'm still getting the hang of it (I had JUST bought one and learned to use it really quickly before doing these models). It takes a lot of control an you really need to focus on the paint flow/pressure so you don't get a spurt of paint, ruining the model (or close to it). The quick version of what I did was prime the model black, then did the first layer in Liche Purple, leaving about 25% of the black, and then once that was done on all of the models, I went back and did it in Warlock Purple (covering up about half of the Liche Purple beneath it). After that it was just a matter of painstakingly covering up any areas that weren't supposed to be covered with black, giving it a nice clean look. This is probably the longest process thus far, but I just zone out and paint it and it goes fast (sadly, so does the time). Painting the silver afterwards is pretty quick and looks fantastic. I don't know if I'm going to go all out on these basic troops and highlight every little bit of it, but I'm thinking I might just do the extreme raised areas on some parts like the knees and top of the chest, perhaps the helmet too. Pretty simple stuffs!

Thanks for the comments and questions, I'm more than happy to answer any others you may have. I'll get some more pics up after I finish the silver and gold on the rest of the guys + guns. After that theyre pretty much complete, actually. Still dont know what to do for the base...

Painting the eyes of the CSM as I type this (not at the same time, that would require far too much skill that I do not have). Also finished all the silver on the right shoulder pads and backpacks. All that's left now is some gold details and washes. Oh and horns... cant forget the horns!

For those that are interested the process of painting the eyes is as follows: Paint complete lens Dark Angels Green. Blend the front of it (near the middle of the face) with Snot Green. Finally blend the inside corner with Scorpion green. Finish off the lens by placing a small dot of Skull White near the back (tricky if you have shaky hands like me!). Once that's done, clean up the lines around the eye with Chaos Black, followed by covering up any large lines with Warlock Purple. Voila! Eyes!

As usual, comments and criticisms are always welcome

Thanks. To be perfectly honest I dont know. I have a pressure gauge/moisture trap combo hooked up, but that just tells me the current PSI, not what I'm spraying at. My airbrush has a valve that controls airflow. The compressor is a Silentaire Scorpion 2, and the airbrush is a Iwata HP-BH Hi line. Love them both!

I've finished the first unit! Except for the bases... :(. I'm going to be doing those tonight when I get home. They turned out exactly how I wanted them to and I'm very happy with them. Can't wait to base them and seal them and have a finished product!

I'm going to be working on the Raptors next... I've an itching to paint these jump packs for some reason.

You need to wash and drybrush the silver parts. They look pretty flat considering how well the rest of the models look.

EDIT: Ok the silver DETAILS look fine, but that chainmail loincloth really needs a bit more attention.

Sorry for going a while without some update! It was my birthday yesterday (yes, make all the Valentines day jokes you like) so I was a bit busy.

Even with 2 things going on at once, I was able to completely finish that unit of guys. They are touched up, based, and varnished and I dont think I could be happier with them! I'll get some quality pics later today... but more importantly, I thought up this brilliant idea...

While trying to sleep last night, I was thinking about the awesomeness of flamers and how my friend who plays Orks wont like them... My Raptors, however, were only armed with Meltaguns. So I thought to myself "wouldnt it be a good idea if I could switch out their weapons at will?" Then I thought about this even further. I could magnetize them, but that would take more effort than I'm willing to put in (and more arms!). So why not just switch the weapons? I couldnt magnetize just the weapons, so I thought of the next best thing... which happened to be even simpler than that. A small pin in the hand of the firer and a hole in the weapons makes for easy switching of weapons... and its fairly sturdy too! Easy weapon switching and no extra models or arms. Problem solved! Now on to painting it all...

I want to paint this unit as fast as possible so I'm going to go at the spare bits with the airbrush first (that includes shoulder pads and jump packs which will be done in seconds). After that I'll quickly airbrush the horns (which I learned the hard way last time, create a mask so I dont get any extra paint on their heads). After that, I'll be done with the airbrush so Illl be able to blaze through them all... painting all the mistakes black first, then completely painting the shoulder pads, jump packs and arms. Then after that it's just a matter of getting through the bodies which shouldnt take long at all. I expect this unit to be done in 3-4 days (ideally).

Once that's done, I have a really strong urge to convert and paint my Defiler, but I think I'll get my Noise Marines done first, so I'll have my combat patrol list complete.

I cant decide if I want to paint a Rhino to spice it up a bit, or to paint the Noise Marines. I kinda want to do the Noise Marines so I can play with my Combat Patrol... hehe.
