I was recommended a different type of primer to try. they suggested to try grey auto primer. I found what I think it was at walmart. It does NOT say enamel on it. So is that acrylic primer then? I know it's vague but I figured I take a shot in the dark.
Worse case I'll test it on a plaguebearer.

I've used Rustoleum Black primer, it worked fine. My preference would be Krylon primers.

My first choice is DupliColor primer. It's an automotive spray paint line (available at most Checker stores and a bunch of others too). Krylon is my second choice. Rustoleum isn't even on my list.
I wouldn't use any of the hobby brands except maybe Testors. They're overpriced. The nozzles on the cans are almost always crap (spray everywhere except on the model). Half of them are labeled primer but are actually paint.
Testors is good quality, but it's still overpriced.

Definitely going to disagree with this. Many of the hobby brands are great. I love Tamiya sprays and primers, and have sworn byt hem for years (until I bought an airbrush).
As for the auto primer? I use it exclusively for priming resin models (esp. Forgeworld) as they have much better adheration properties than regular paints/primers, and provide a very, very thin base coat from which to start (no obstruction of detail).
And finally as overpriced as it is I still love GWs primer for plastics, nothign has beat it yet, so I'll happily pay the higher price to get a quality primer.

I'll second that. I use Dupli-Color Sandable Primer and love it. It's great for detail, works better than GW's stuff ( IMO) and is less than half the cost of a can of GW Primer. After showing my friends the results and the price they've switched to it as well.

Grey car primer will be some kind of volatile organic compound based primer. It will stink but it will do a good job.
If you want an acrylic primer, use gesso tinted with paint. You have to brush it on. I've never tried Tamiya's spray primer. It's probably fine -- Tamiya are a good outfit -- but I'm perfectly happy with my spray car primer and my gesso.
GW's primer is too expensive for what it is.
When priming any surface make sure it is free from dust and grease by washing it with detergent and rinsing and drying it.

I use Krylon Black or White Primer. Good coverage, lots of pigment (so you don't have to shake the can all day!), moderate price.
I will use Walmart $1 spray primers on terrain but they don't have a lot of pigment so it takes more passes to cover. Testors are good, especially if you need a LOT of pigment, but they are highly expensive.
Never used Tamiya. Won't use Rustoleum or auto primers as I've heard they are easy to over-prime with.
Whatever you end up using, remember ONLY "DUST" the mini with primer. DO NOT give it a perfectly-covered, even coat (this is called over-priming). "Dusting" allows the paint to adher to the mini and lessens the chances of chipping
