In your personal Opinion ONLY.. do Genestealers have a high gloss shine to them, or are they more dull and subdued..
Ie.. do I use a glossy or matte protective spray?
How do you mentally envision em?

It could be, but I thought that asking what people mentally imagined them to be, would be more fluffy..
If it needs to be moved, it sure can be.. I am happy in either event.

Well, I always thought that, after initial birthing, they would develop a more lizard like appearance, hence a scaly, dry skin/bone color.
HOwever, if you want a fresh from the sack look, then a few dollops of stretched glue/greenstuff would do nicely

Glossy (not high) or satin exo-skeleton (Purple parts in the atypical genestealer) and flat in the other areas (pink in the atypical...) to me always worked best.
Ask a mod to move this, it'll get more hits in Modelling and Painting forum.

Not sure where it falls, but the Xenomorph from the "Alien" movies was the inspiration for my Stealers.
They are primed glossy black with a highlight of mithril to give them that robo-erotic Giger feel.

They were the inspiration for ALL the genestealers. Do you have any photos? That actually sounds like it looks really cool.

Hm...
I'm thinking that your own Genestealers should be as glossy as you want them to be.
So, I guess the real question is, how do you envision Genestealers?

Are we talking classic blue and purple scheme???
If so I would say matte finish with glossy/drooling mouthparts, teeth and tounge.
If not classic scheme???
However you damn well like!

OK.. for those of you who DON"T know me, I have poor eyesight. Bad. I have a LOT of difficulty determining how things look to others. That is why I am asking. My mental image is that genestealers are glossy, giger-esque .. but my family who are taking an active part in building this army with me.. think that the dull dry look is better.
So, ethstetically. .. which looks better to you folks?
The stealer on the left is matte coated, and the one on the right is not.
I did these with the varnish dip method..

This will maybe sound stupid but hey here goes, I personally have different visions of them depending on where they are in the universe.
Example In space hulk I envision them wet/slimey. I suppose aliens the movie had to do with this.
If however you have them on a planet surface even a wet place like a jungle I still imagine them dry and boney looking.
Now aesthetically speaking glossy models tend to look cheesy IMHO and after seeing both you paint jobs I personally like the matte/dull finish.
BTW Nice work either way!
Hope this helps.

I like the glossy one, personally.
But I seal everything in a semi-gloss sealant. And I mean everything.

Its a hard choice for fluff as there aremany types of Genestealer.
As if they were slimmy they could have come out of a deep terraformed tunnel but bone colour would be if they have been out for a long time.

Great color scheme!!! I like the left (Matte) one with the light pink but I still like the semi-gloss carapice. Sorry, I'm not much help I guess. (And the darker pink is probably a bi-product of the gloss sealer).

Nope.. the darker color is because that is GW Warlock Purple and the other is GW Tentacle Pink.. it is not a fault of the gloss.
Because of my vision, I am making each brood of 10 a differnt color so I can easily tell at a glance who belongs where in the army tray. So, they are Pink, Warlock Purple, Scorp Green, Blazing Orange, Ice Blue and Yellow under the brown stain.. I need a good color for the Broodlord and his posse,.. thinking of Blood Red on the retinue and ALL colors in some fashion on the Broodlord.

I agree I think it really depends on where they are, what the biomass came from things of that nature. I know it may sound a bit too involved but thats the way I look at things. As for your two test minis, honestly I liked them both for very small differences. So that being said Im probably not much help lol
