I'm coming into about 30 terminators as a deal with a friend of mine and I think I'm going to paint them obnoxiously bright red and I'm looking for some advice. Originally I was going to prime them caution orange and hit them with a thin coat of blood red, throw in an ink wash and some highlights and call it a day, but the orange paint I tried coated heavily and unevenly on my test models so that idea was scrapped. I think instead I may prime them white and start off with blazing orange and blood red.. any advice?

have you tried priming/undercoating with Foundation colour 'Mechrite Red'? A single coat gives a nice solid dull red, which can then be highlighted with a brighter colour like Blood Red

That'll work, but it will have to wait until the weekend for me to pick up a pot of it along with the new lizardmen army book. What does everyone use to highlight on top of blood red? Blaze orange or some mix?

blazing or fiery orange work well as highlights on blood red, mix in a small ammount of golden yellow to make that a little brighter if needed.

You should also prime your models white. It brightens colors like theres no tomorrow. It makes red gore look like blood red when applied (ie its great for making colors annoyingly bright)

I use a Reaper Master series paint called amazingly: Bright Red.

It really should be "Prostitiute Lipstick Red." Or "Over the Top Candy Red" like you might see on an old muscle car.

I would use the mecharite red over a white undercoat as stated above, then highlight to your liking.

In my experience the foundation paints seem to smother out any primer they go over.. wouldn't the white almost be a waste at that point? Why not just start with the merchrite red? Although, I'll admit I've never used the foundation paints on an unprimed model before...

Liquitex makes a flouredcent red I have used. If you descide to use it thin it down and do 2+ coats over a cadium red then do a highight with a yellow orange. (I use only a select few hobby paints so I use real color namesso I have no idea what those would be called). Also a pearledcent artist medium may give you an interesting shiny effect. A varnish will also brighten them a bit.

Well, a quick test mini turned out a good enough tabletop quality mini with vibrant red armor and silvery accents. The process went as follows:
White Primer
2 coats of Merchrite Red (second coat more or less insured even coverage)
1 heavy dry brushing of Blood Red
1 use of Baal Red Ink Wash
1 light dry brushing of Blazing Orange
1 use of Baal Red Ink Wash
1 coat of Boltgun Metal on stormbolter and various iconography
1 use of Badab Black over Boltgun Metal
1 light dry brushing of chainmail on stormbolter
1 light dry brushing of mithril silver on iconography.

Will post photos in the next day or so..
