I am looking for your all opinions on the best paint brushes and sizes, I am a newish painter but would rather start with some quality brushes then the trash at wal mart, im prolly looking at getting 2-3 brushes, price isnt to big a deal atm, granted I dont want to spend 100$ on 3 brushes, thanks for your time!

Cant go wrong with Kolinsky sable. Should be able to find them at and hobby/art store.

I'd buy some cheap Kolinsky sable brushes. The brand isn't as important as not having to learn painting with poor synthetics. The ones I use cost about 3-7€ each, and last for a very long time, double that if you use brush soap.

The supply does not get to make the demands.

Most art/craft stores have variety packs that you can buy with like 9 or 10 brushes with different sizes for like 10 bucks kina cheap and dont last forever, but they last long enough to get their worth outa them.

First and most important, don't buy the GW-brushes

Second, you can get some very good deals on paintbrushes online, so google for paintbrushes. I bought some pretty decent DaVinci-College brushes for 1,50 Euros each.

Third: You'll need some size 0 brushes for the details...buy several if you don't treat your brushes well, as you will go through them pretty fast. Then I would suggest buying 1-2 from every 2nd available size from there. (My last order for example was 4 size 0, 2 size 4, 2 size 8, 2 size 12)

Fourth: If you want your brushes to last longer rinse them off under running water after every use, then form the tip again and use the protector-cap that's supplied with the paintbrushes.

I've always found the GW brushes to be pretty good at the job (If you can afford the somewhat high prices). I use a standard for most large area work, one fine for shading/ washes, and one fine for very small details.

The most important thing to do, whatever you go for, is look after them!

indeed, its mostly about taking care of the brushes. When I first got into painting my stuff years ago, I spent some decent cash on good brushes. When it was just me using them they were still good after a couple months of using them. Then my somewhat older brother wanted to play nids, and inside a week he destroyed pretty much all the brushes I had. SO take good care of them

If you have an artist studio store, or a specialist artist store i'm sure the staff know alot about different brush materials, flow properties, brush maintenance etc. If not then there is probably a whole range of articles on this on sites such as coolminiornot and the like.

I personally use GW brushes right now, and i really like them. I used really expensive ones before, but i felt i didnt really get much extra out of paying almost double the price compared to GW. GWs are somewhat cheap, easy to come by, and exist in all sizes you want/need. They also last a really long time if you take care of your brushes.

Thanks for all the input, what I am understanding is that GW makes some decent brushes Kolinsky Sables are good, even some of the brush packs at Michaels are alright, but to make sure I take care of them, and it looks like I need a few 0's, 1's, 2's and 3's. The more advice the better, thanks!

Not sure if this is helpful but , some other painters that have experience with other brand of brushes all consider GW's to be trash quality and expensive.

Thanks Luna, that link was helpful.. .on a side note, and this is just me being a noob, how important is good paint? I know, maybe thats an obvious answer but I am currently using the FolkArt and some Ceramcoat and I had this incredible urge to say Applebottom although I think its Apple barrel either way im not using anything apple, but back on topic, how important is it to have good paint? I believe I will be going to Michaels to get some decent brushes to start.

I have those 2 same brand at home before , i would say they are pretty similar with GW paints, but tons cheaper for sure.

Paint IMO is the most important you look for painting. Experience is one thing, but bad paint will drive everyone crazy.

I recommend vallejo , many people will recommend GW paints ( this is warhammer board after all i guess )

For people that have the chance to try them all, no one ever recommends GW again . This i guarantee .
