hey all, as the title says, my models bases look really bland, the theme is city fight and its just i dont know, isnt hitting the sweet spot, the only good models are the ones with rusted metals from the GW basing kit, maybe some barbed wire etc? suggestions please.

and WIP shot

how do you like them, i think the blue gives them a unique "pop"!

IMHO, your orks are great, especially the blue, and your bases are neat but still interesting[ish]

My only tip to hightening the bases is to every third or forth to add dead marine or a mushroom or something odd like that, but nice work

If you want the bases 'bare' use two grades of ballast as if adding the grass to the orks bases.
OR
Just add a few more bits to the bland bases.
Nothing special just a strip of card/sprue painted as wreckage, discarded helmet/severed head/
skull/skeleton arm, spent ammo casings/magazines/weapons, larger rock/s, tubes/wire etc
OR
Scrape off some of the rocks and add a puddle or some mud.
OR
Some variation in paint colour. Some browns could help.
OR
Do a combination of all of the above!

All these should be easy enough to do without damaging the minis.

Hope this helps!

Hey

I had exactly the same problem but i can offer you a simple tip!

Buy the 40k ruin buildings you know the one with four corner bits.then break the flat bits up they should snap into right sized pieaces and breack bits of the buildings and cut the pillar of them and you have a fair amount of basing supllies

Heres some pics if you dont mind me posting

P.s get hold of a big pieace of slate and brack it up works wonders

I'm getting really good results out of much cheaper and simple things than buying an entire ruined buildings set. I bought a package of gridded plasticard, and a good sized thing of dirt/rubble from Woodland Scenics. I use the plasticard as damaged tile for urban settings, and I decorate it with chunks of sprues I have little bits off of pill blisters for their texture, smashed up chunks of junk AOL CDs and bits that I'm never going to use, like hunter-killer missiles from vehicals and such. I'll post pictures when I'm done painting the current batch I'm on, but it's rather simple, and I think they look pretty nice.

Sometimes just adding some grass, even dead yellowing stuff for a city fight can add the finishing touch! Its also quick and simple for basic troops with HQ's etc getting more attention?

Have a look at my site for examples of my bases.

da-chaos-orks : your bases do look like the way i'm trying to get right but since i just lost my job $$ is in a short supply

CENArtDamage : the gridded plasticard sounds like a good option creating a gothic style into my yawn bases so i might go with this option with the extras, ill have a look at my local train hobby store which have some good scenic foilage

Grandmaster : the thing with adding grass to rubble styled texture, it just seems out of place, i would agree if it were something similar to ancient rubble but i don't think it will suit well...

thanks for all the comments! ill get some more pictures//info when i get some progress going

EDIT:- feel free to post your bases
