Alright, so I need a paint formula for getting a metallic hot rod red color. Paints ratios, washes, etc... I'm going to use this on my next project, and I'm a little iffy about experimenting since I don't have any of the paints for it yet... and don't really want to go about wasting money. So any suggestions (preferably with example models) would be awesome.

Mythril Silver, then red ink wash.

Your local art store (craft store maybe) like pearl or art supply warehouse (in orange county) will have metalic inks in colors. You can also try liquitex pearledcent medium which is akin to what they actually put in car Paint. It will have a sortof metalic glow.

If you go the ink route you will have t do a base coat first to avoid huge ammounts of layering. I'm at work now illpoat pics later if I can.

i would use red ink over gold. base coat black, then heavy db of tin bitz followed by gold then a final of silver before a couple of washes of red ink (old type). gives a really warm look to the metal

Check out my gallery here
Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

any example of the steps / results of that?

it seems like you can cut the whole process in half from starting with gold / silver with red ink .

You can get a product from Vallejo, which is Opalescent Candy by itself, as in just the sparkles, the rest is clear. You can add it to an acryllic gloss coat, and put it over any color you want.

This can be brushed on or sprayed in an airbrush. I used it over green to make pearlescent dragon wing membranes, and also over Yellow to make candy Tyranid Wing Membranes.

I could get some images later this evening.

(Do you have airbrush access or need a brush painted method?)

probably but that's the way i always do my metallics - the layering of the various shades gives a nicer variation imo - sorry no egs at this time.

It comes out pink but should dry more red, althoughit has a slight pink hue if you mix it with a dark reor go over the red GW foundation would prbably eliminate that.

Or, REAPER has a wonderful paint called...

Wait for it...

RED METALLIC.

It is a VERY good paint. Thin enough to not need watered down, but pigmented enough that a couple thin coats ends up pretty gorgeous. Shades well, too. Not so hot for drybrushing.
