Average Orc Boy

Hail friends - In 25years of Wargaming I have never ever really got into 40k. I dont know why this is but It has never really happened for me. I decided that 09 was going to be the year when this all changed. To this effect I bought the Black Reach set and a couple of other marines and started to get painting. One thing I do badly (as well as poor podcast segments) is come up with good lists.
Can anyone help me out and tell me what would be a good 1500 pts marines list that would be competative without being frowned upon.
Please help me out guys
Thanks
Owen

Good units at the moment include Sternguard (especially when combined with either Kantor or Vulcan) mounted in drop pods and guided in by scout bikers with locator beacons.
This is a very easy core to build a list around as you can add podding tac squads and dreads, infilitrating scouts and other stuff that provides good synergy.
Most of the other good lists tend to involve Land Raiders and assault termies, but these are not so good to build 1500pt lists around.
Do you have any particular chapter/them/play style in mind as this would help to begin forming your list?

I personally don't like razor backs, built mine as a rhino and used the other bits in conversions. If your going to send troops across the board you want as many as you can. Either that or tag team razor backs with something hard hitting in them. Support that with a termie drop to cause a bit of panic. The dread I'd use as anti tank (try to get something else too incase it goes pop early on)

@lord_blackfang - There is a lot of confusion about the relations between different parts of the british isles.
Wales is a Principality of England (not a seperate nation), but retains a seperate cultural identity, including retaining celtic-welsh as an alternative official language. Entering Wales is generally termed 'crossing a border' although it is not a national border.
Hope that helps!!
Back on topic, if you are looking to add vehicles to support infantry I can suggest nothing better than Land Speeder Typhoons. 90 points each gets you a fast skimmer with a heavy bolter and a heavy 2 missile launcher. Squads of 3 can rip apart hordes with 9x heavy bolter shots and 6x frag missile templates, while against vehicles you can put out 6x krak missiles.
These thing are definately the new hotness for Spase Marienz!!! Hurr

Captain, Relic Blade, Bolter, Hellfire Rounds - 140
7x Sternguard, Sgt with PF, combi-melta, meltagun - 210
10x Tactical, Sgt with PW, Flamer, ML - 185
10x Tactical, Sgt with PW, Flamer, ML - 185
10x Tactical, Sgt with PF, Meltagun, ML - 200
Rhino, extra armour - 50
3x Land Speeder Typhoons - 270
Land Raider Crusader, pintle Multi-melta - 260
This list is in no way optimal - it was a first pass after the SM codex came out. The idea was that the sternguard would ride in the Land Raider, supported by one of the tac squads which would ride in the shadow of the raider and then zoom past it when they closed with the enemy. The other two tac squads would hold objectives and the Typhoons would be a mobile reserve.
It needs a lot of tweaking but feel free to use it as a starting point.

Hmmmm, space marines from Wales?
Well, the easy answer is to go chaos. Add lots of tentacles, gribbly bits, and mutations. Add some Slaaneshi demons (the gender-confused type) and you have a Torchwood-style army.
Just like home.
You can blame the D6G for this one :-)

This leaves 15 pts to play around with, (chainfist on a termie might be a good idea, or a lascannon in one of the tacsquads)
You could also skip the Scouts for a Predator instead
Well, alot of scoring units with some good fast transport options.
Don't know why I never fit a Dreadnaught into any of my lists.. it's one of my fav units :p

With those 15pts.. get some cloaks. Id also suggest 10pts to get a h.bolter (gets chunky hellfire shells.) Drop a termie.. get that termie squad a heavy (mobile!) weapon! Get some combi-meltas on the sterns to deal with armor. If youve got a razorback crew.. its well worth giving them a lascannon as their staying behind neways. Do that twice, + whatever the termies have will be a nice amount of AT. But on the whole, I prefer calvins list. Combat tactics is very useful.

I like this list but I'd consider dropping one of the sternguard units, whittling your termies to a 5 man squad and getting a land raider with TLLC. If you have enough points get a drop pod for the sternguard and put Pedro in it with the Sternguard. The land raider will draw fire but if you can get those termies where they are needed and supported with combat squads in Razorbacks.. as well as sternguard support fire... the termies would be a great counter assault unit.

Nothing wrong with razorbacks... the key being the plural.
If you are looking for assaulty transport, rhinos are better but if you look at 5 points for a TL Heavy Bolter, you have a lot of firepower added for little investment.
I currently play a salamander/rhino list and it has worked like a charm except against a necron destroyer heavy army. Rhinos really don't die that easy and razorbacks are just rhinos with a real weapon on them.
In a kp game, I would just leave the squad intact and play the razorback as a light tank. When you go for objectives, you can combat squad a 5-man in there...
Just remember 1 razorback is junk, 5+ is a lot for your opponent to take out and a lot of cheap firepower for you.
