Laying siege to the Temple of Pecans.

So I'm getting around to painting my AoBR orks and already painted a few test models. I really hate the neon green the Gamesworkshop orks are painted like so I've started diversifying my portfolio if you will.

So far I've done up some of the nobs in a catachan green->camo green style and I really like the effect. I guess my over-all goal is to possibly have around 4 or 5 skin tone variations throughout my army and was wondering if anyone has had any successful paint jorbs they wouldn't mind sharing. After all, the WAAAAGH is an equal opportunity employer.

For now I'm going to log onto WAR and check out some of the skin tones for the black orks.

Oh, and if it requested enough, I'll post pictures of my progress. Though I've found my current camera doesn't do my works justice.

Thats what i'm doing too. I basically have just been picking two shades of green, one pretty dark and one intermediate color then blender one to the other and slowing adding white to highlight. I havent painted anything in a while but from what i hear my paints may be outdated name wise. I'll look at what i have tonight because honestly i cant even remember anyways...

My suggestion would be this. Start with 50/50 black and the dark angles green. Then paint dark angles green on all but the recessed areas. Then 50/50 dark angles green and goblin green for a thick highlight. Then add a bit more goblin green to the mix for a broken highlight. Then just repeat the process but shift the green paints to one shade lighter. Example: In stead of 50/50 black and dark angles green for the base coat just use dark angles green to start and add a lighter paint at the end. It might also be a good Idea to wash a few, or all, of them with thrakka green after you have finished painting them. You could have 6 to 7 different shades of green and batch each group. Then you would have a sea of green with a more realistic feel to it. As humans have various shades of skin, obviously. That would be my suggestion. I started doing this before I sold my orks in favor of necrons.

Just my 2 cents...

Great suggestions. I like the darker skin idea and it would be perfect fluff-wise seeing as how orks get darker as they mature. Especially when applied to nobs.

Sadly though, my paints are a bit out-dated as I have yet to get any foundations or "washes"

Btw, what is the difference between inks and washes?

In theory they both function the same. The creep into the recesses and create shading. I tend to prefer washes. Washes are pretty much just watered down versions of the other colors. However unlike watered down paints they tend to apply more evenly and are light enough that you can use multiple washes to achieve shading on a model with out much fear of "Mudding" up the model. Inks do the same but the color is applied more harshly. The ink is thin so it will sink into recesses but takes longer to dry so it has a tendency to bleed.

As for updating your colors. It is not needed as long as your paints haven't dried. For what I was suggesting just take black and your darkest green and work you way up to lighter. And just repeat the process. It is easy and very effective. If you lack a variety of green paints you might have to get some more for maximum effect. The names don't matter as much as having a variety. You should post some when you finish.

Ghah! Camera's finally kaput. Len's cracked, thing lasted forever though. It served the emperor well on many occasions. Now it may finally rest in peace knowing it's duty was done.

ANYWAY, the soonest, and luckiest time to get some pictures up would be Wednesday by borrowing a friends camera.

In the long term, I'm not sure what will happen, I don't exactly have enough expendable cash to buy a new camera right now. It may take a while.

In the meantime, I will continue to experiment with skin variations.
