I've decided to paint the front arc on models that have them in a grey color [leaving the rest of the base rim black], but I'm not sure what's the most accurate way to make sure a full half of the base is marked off without extending the arc too far or cutting it too short. Anyone know any good methods? As of now I've been using a ruler and just trying to identify where the base is widest, but for some reason they keep looking a bit off.

The method I'll be using is to set up a template using a ruler. (The circle will be widest at 30mm exactly for small bases, 40 for medium, and 50 for large.) So, I draw the circle, measure across untill I have 20mm(or appropriate number) on the ruler, then draw my line. From then on, I simply set that size base on the template, and mark the arc on the base.

I set the models down on the edge of a sheet of paper. If you make a line of same size base models, with the edge of the paper in the center, it becomes visibly obvious if it's off-center.

Then just mark the lines where they stand.

I used a compass and a lot of measuring to make my template which looks like a bullseye. Then I noticed the GF9 3" templates have the same lines which would have made it really easy so get one of those.

I have a template somewheren. I got it from Privateer press I think.

As a side note, the blastmarkers of 40k also have lines which can be used...

If I find it I will post the templates...

Yeah, YW7 makes all kinds of useful stuff like the front arc template. There's lots of useful stuff to download in the downloads section of the Privateer Forums (and apparently at GuruDojo as well).

I used a circle template for mechanical/architectural drafting (I'm a civil engineer, so I had one). You can find them for about $5 at most office supply and art supply stores in the 'drafting' section.
